The Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission or BROC was at the County Commissioners' meeting last week to get approval for the Community Services Block Grant Emergency Assistance Project, Family Self-Sufficiency Project, and the budget.  The Emergency Assistance Program helps those in need with fuel and electricity services. The Family Self-Sufficiency Project helps with education and employment supports.  BROC gave some statistics for the tri-county area of Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany.  The percentage of the total population below poverty level in Wilkes is 19 percent, Ashe 16 percent, and Alleghany 21 percent.  In all three counties, the age group with the largest number below the poverty level is 18 to 64.  Commissioners approved the projects and the BROC budget.
