Wilkes Christmas Events This Saturday

Christmas time’s a-coming! The Wilkes Heritage Museum Annual Christmas Open House is this Saturday, December 2 from 10 til 4 with refreshments, live music, tours, and activities. Admission to the Wilkes Heritage Museum is free for the Open House. The annual Wilkes County Christmas, organized by the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, is also this Saturday. The parade begins in North Wilkesboro at 3 p.m. and ends in Wilkesboro. The theme is “Christmas in Candyland.” Wilkesboro Mayor Mike Inscore and his wife, Shirley Inscore, are parade marshals.  Parade check-in begins at 11am at the Corner of CBD Loop and Ninth Street. Parade Route is: Main Street North Wilkesboro, to 10th St., left on D Street, left on CBD Loop, right on Wilkesboro Ave., cross the bridge to Main Street, Wilkesboro. Parade concludes at Curtis Bridge Rd. Floats (non-profit and commercial) will be judged to receive awards.

Money Theft

A North Wilkesboro victim called the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office regarding the theft of money. According to the victim, someone entered their residence and took $1500 in cash. Two suspects were listed. Charges and arrests are pending further investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

Reckless and Open Warrants

Recently, the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of someone driving recklessly on Cricket Ivy Lane in North Wilkesboro. Deputies found the suspect’s vehicle and determined the name of the suspect. The 18-year-old black male was found in a nearby house and arrested on open warrants and resisting arrest.

Stolen Money from Vehicle

In another report, a North Wilkesboro victim told the Sheriff’s Office that money was taken from her vehicle. The victim was at home when they heard their dog barking. They looked outside and saw two people inside their vehicle parked in the driveway. Thirty-one dollars in cash was the only thing reported stolen. Deputies have a description of the two suspects and the investigation is ongoing.

State Appointment from Neighboring Iredell County

Gov. Cooper nominated an Iredell County farmer to serve on the North Carolina State Board of Agriculture. Ben A. Shelton III of Olin is a cattle and dairy farmer and the Owner of Rocky Creek Dairy. He was recognized as the Iredell County Farmer of the Year in 2022. Also a veterinarian, Shelton was originally appointed by Governor McCrory in 2016 and is being nominated to serve an additional term.

More NC Jobs

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP), a lithium-ion battery pouch manufacturer, will create 352 new jobs in Davidson County, Governor Roy Cooper announced this week. The company will invest $233 million to build its first U.S. advanced manufacturing facility in the City of Linwood. Governor Cooper met with DNP Executives on his economic development trip to Tokyo in October. DNP’s project will be facilitated, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant, and over the course of the 12-year term of this grant, the project is estimated to grow the state’s economy by $691 million.

Robbed at Gunpoint

According to the report filed with the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office, someone was robbed at gunpoint in Hays. The white male suspect reportedly used a handgun to take a woman’s bank card. Sheriff’s Officials do have a description of the suspect and charges are pending further investigation.

Fatal One-Vehicle Wreck

A Wilkes County man died in a one-vehicle accident in Ferguson on Sunday afternoon. The NC Hwy Patrol stated that 37-year-old Joseph Robert Falco, of Ferguson was operating a 2010 Dodge truck and going southbound on Elk Creek-Darby Road. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road in a sharp curve, overturned. and hit a tree. According to the reported filed with the Hwy Patrol, thee preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal accident.

Wilkes Search and Rescue

Over the weekend, the Wilkes Rescue Squad, along with Mulberry-Fairplains Fire/Rescue and Wilkes County Sheriff's Office were called to a missing persons report. When emergency personnel arrived on scene, they began searching for the lost juvenile. A K9 search dog was requested from Iredell County Sheriff office to assist. Drones, UTV’s, and the dog team searched and located the juvenile near a river bank, He was uninjured but taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

NC Affordable Internet in Rural Areas

Governor Roy Cooper urged Congress to reauthorize the Affordable Connectivity Program, which reduces the cost of high-speed internet for eligible North Carolinians. The Governor co-signed a letter with 24 other governors, calling on Congress to continue funding this program. Administered by the Federal Communications Commission, the Affordable Connectivity Program provides qualified low-income households $30 per month off the cost of an internet subscription and $100 off the cost of a device. Without bipartisan federal action, the program could run out of funds as early as April 2024, cutting off 861,000 households in North Carolina.
