Apparently, they don't know that they are being watched on surveillance camera. Wilkesboro Police were called to Walmart concerning a shoplifter.  Store staff reported seeing a white male enter the store and go to the Sporting Goods section of the store.  The man was seen tearing a rifle scope package from a locked rack. Then the man took a knife and opened the package right there inside the store and removed the rifle scope.  Finally, the man took the scope and walked out the Pharmacy exit. Take the Cake and Run

Someone ordered the birthday cake, and then someone else stole it. Wilkesboro Police were called to the Lowes on Winkler Street. The store manager reported that a white male came in the store to pick up a birthday cake. The store had the name and contact number of the woman who ordered the cake. This week, the white male came in, got the cake, asked the clerk for candles, and then left the store without paying. A store employee followed the man into the parking lot. The man left in a white Ford Crown Victoria, and according to the report, almost hit a store employee in the parking lot as he left. Police used video surveillance to identify the man that was later arrested by another law enforcement agency.

NC Gov Announces Funding for Rural Planning

Governor Pat McCrory announced this week additional funding for Rural Planning Organizations (RPOs) that will assist the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) with transportation planning in rural areas across the state. NCDOT provides grants to help cover the cost of this work. While the amount of work for the RPOs has increased over the years, funding has not. To help cover the costs of these additional responsibilities, NCDOT is increasing the amount of funds granted to each RPO by $8,800-$11,000. "North Carolina's rural communities have been hit hard by the recession," said Governor McCrory. "It is important that we do everything possible to better connect people in these areas with jobs and opportunities. The Department of Transportation's funding and support of our Rural Planning Organizations will seek to do just that."

Sen Hagan Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Bill

U.S. Senator Kay Hagan is cosponsoring legislation to encourage schools across the country to maintain access to critical life-saving medication for children with food and other allergies. The bipartisan School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act will encourage states to improve school access to epinephrine auto-injectors, such as the EpiPen, to be used if students have life threatening allergic reactions.  “Millions of children across the country have food allergies, and more than 15 percent have experienced an allergic reaction in school,” said Hagan. “For these students, exposure to the wrong snack or food at lunch can quickly become fatal.” Hagan joins a bipartisan coalition of 18 Senators in cosponsoring the bill. The School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act would reward states that require schools to maintain a supply of epinephrine auto-injectors and permit trained authorized school personnel to administer an epinephrine injection if a student experiences an anaphylactic reaction.

Scam Calls in Wilkes from Fake Collection Agencies

It's a scam alert. The Wilkes Sheriff's Office has received a number of calls from local residents concerning phone calls from people who claim to be from a collection agency. According to one of those reports from a victim in North Wilkesboro, they received a call from someone who said they were from a collection agency and threatening to call Police or the Sheriff if the victim did not pay. The caller did obtain the victim's bank account number and withdrew 520 dollars from the account. When the unauthorized transaction was discovered, the victim contacted their bank and the Wilkes Sheriff's Department. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number over the phone unless you have made the call and know with whom you're dealing. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name. Kicking in the Doors

The Wilkes Sheriff's Office is investigating break-ins at two locations in which thieves came in the same way.  A North Wilkesboro called on Sunday to report a break-in while they were at church.  Victims returned home to find the basement door kicked in and the kitchen door damaged.  Once inside, the thief only took some loose change that was in the bedroom of the home.  Nothing else was reported stolen and damages were estimated at 500 dollars.  Then a Roaring River property owner reported the break-in of an vacant residence. It appears someone kicked open the backdoor causing 50 dollars in damages but nothing was reported stolen from this unoccupied house.  No suspects were listed with either report.
