Senator Hagan Votes For Bill

U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) today commented after the Senate passed a bipartisan bill to extend the payroll tax cut for 4.7 million North Carolina workers for two months. The bill also continues unemployment benefits for two months.  Hagan voted for the measure.  “I voted to prevent a tax increase on middle class families come January 1,” said Hagan. “In North Carolina, 4.7 million workers benefit from the payroll tax cut.”   Hagan also voted today for legislation that funds the federal government for fiscal year 2012, including federal disaster relief assistance.  Hagan said, “A government shutdown would have been absolutely irresponsible.  I wasn’t elected to shut down the government and deprive North Carolinians essential services they consistently support.”

Prison Escapee Caught at Walmart Shoplifting

He escaped from State Prison, but he was caught by Loss Prevention Officers at Walmart.  Wilkesboro Police were called to Walmart regarding two people being detained by Loss Prevention for shoplifting.  A 17-year-old female was seen concealing merchandise and trying to leave without paying.  She and the man with her were stopped and detained by Loss Prevention.  They said the man, identified as Kevin Dancy, had not been seen taking anything; however, when police searched Dancy they found stolen jewelry in both pants pockets, both socks, and inside his shirt.  Police also found pills on Dancy.  A check in NC AWARE revealed that Dancy was wanted for escaping from State Prison.  Both the teenager and Dancy were taken into custody.  The teen was charged with misdemeanor larceny.  Dancy was charged with felony escape from prison, drug possession, and larceny.  And the moral of this story is:  You may escape from State Prison, but you will NOT escape Loss Prevention Officers at Walmart.

More Damage Than Theft

They caused over 1100 dollars in damages just to steal 7 dollars in cash.  Wilkesboro Police were called out to a vehicle break-in at a residence on Welborn Avenue.  The victim said he went outside to his van and found the gas cap open.  A substance that appeared to be sugar was on the ground under the gas cap.  Then the victim found someone had tried to pry open the passenger side door and then had broken out the car window.  The only thing taken from inside the van was 7 dollars in cash and change.  Again, the van sustained over 1100 dollars in damages.  There were no witnesses and are no leads at this time.  Police are continuing to investigate.

Numerous Vehicle Break-Ins

The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Department was inundated with vehicle break-in reports last week.  Two more that were investigated at the end of last week came from Boomer and Purlear.  Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a prowler call at a residence on High Rock Road.  When the Deputy arrived, the homeowner said someone was in his pickup, but they ran off when he came outside.  The victim found 2 dollars missing from his truck; however, he found 40 dollars missing from inside the house.  The Deputy did find signs of forced entry to the back door. The victim said the suspect was dressed all in black.  The Deputy searched the area for the suspect but was unable to find him.  Then Sheriff’s Officials were called to a Purlear residence regarding a car break-in.  The victim stated that she left her pocketbook in her unlocked vehicle overnight.  When she went out the next morning, she found grass on the front seat, her purse had been gone through, and several things were stolen including over 1000 dollars in cash, silver necklace, sunglasses, and 3 gift cards to Kohls and Belk.  There are no suspects in this break-in.  The Sheriff’s Department is investigating.

Stolen Heat Pump

From the property that was stolen from a Purlear residence, there must have been more than one thief.  A White Oak Road homeowner called the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Department with a heat theft.  It is getting colder and maybe that’s the reason for the theft or maybe they just wanted the copper pipes are wiring found inside.  The homeowner reported that someone stole the Goodman outdoor heat pump from his home.  The stole heat pump is valued over 2400 dollars.  There are no known witnesses to the theft and there are no leads to the identity of the suspects.

NC Senator Hagan Votes for Budget Amendment

Earlier this month Congresswoman Virginia Foxx from our 5th District here in North Carolina said that she had voted for a Balanced Budget Amendment in the House.  Last week U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) released the following statement after also voting for the S.J.Res.24 Balanced Budget Amendment in the Senate.  “Voting to amend the United States Constitution – the foundation of our system of government - is something I consider with great care,” said Hagan. “I wish it was not necessary at all. Unfortunately, partisan bickering and game playing have overwhelmed every effort to come together – Democrats and Republicans – to make the difficult choices the American people expect.”  Sen Hagan went on to say, “Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, has called our debt our greatest national security threat.  The whole nation knows we must address the serious consequences of our accumulating deficits.  For this reason, and after great reflection, I voted today to support a reasonable and moderate balanced budget amendment.”

NC Majority Leader Responds to Gov's Veto

As 3WC News reported last week, Governor Beverly Perdue vetoed SB 9 “An Act to Reform the Racial Justice Act of 2009 to be consistent with the United State Supreme Court Ruling in McClaskey v. Kemp”.  According to House Majority Leader of North Carolina, Paul Stam, once again the Governor has demonstrated her lack of understanding of the law enforcement needs of our people by thwarting the will of almost every elected law enforcement official in the state.  Stam states that The Racial Justice Act is, in effect, another six year delay on enforcement of the death penalty.  The Majority Leader believes that the Governor’s claim that she is a strong supporter of the death penalty is belied by her veto.  The so called “Racial Justice Act” which allows white murderers to claim “racial discrimination” because they murdered white victims in cold blood but were convicted by too many white jurors is obviously misnamed.   Stam aske North Carolina Citizens to read the bill that she vetoed, because he says it allows for relief when a murderer can demonstrate racial prejudice in his or her own case which has been the law for a long time and will remain the law under this legislation.

There were 3 in Millers Creek and one in North Wilkesboro.  Yes, multiple reports of vehicle break-ins continue to come in at the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Department.  On Wednesday, 3 victims from Millers Creek and 1 from North Wilkesboro called in reports.  There was one resident on Green Oak Drive in Millers Creek that said their 2008 Dodge was entered overnight and two items were stolen:  a 2009 Appalachian State classring and Oakley sunglasses.  Stolen property is valued at nearly 800 dollars.  Two residents on Raven Circle in Millers Creek said their vehicles were entered.  Nothing was stolen from either vehicle but the back glass in one was broken out causing 900 dollars in damages.  Then on Belle Ridge Road in North Wilkesboro, someone reported that their wallet was stolen from their unlocked vehicle overnight.  No suspects were listed with either vehicle break-in; the Sheriff’s Department is investigating.

Slightly Used...Slightly Stolen

Will someone be getting a slightly used…slightly stolen 4-wheeler for Christmas?  A resident on Summit Road in Purlear reported a garage break-in this week to the Sheriff’s Department.  The garage is separated from the main house, and sometime during the night Tuesday, thieves entered the garage through the double doors and stole a green Suzuki Quad Runner, a car battery, 4 five-gallon gas cans, and a 2.5 gallon gas can.  Stolen property is valued at nearly 2700 dollars.  Also the power meter for the residence was pulled from the box during the break-in and theft.  There is no word on suspects at this time and the Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate.
