Wilkes Unemployment Rate Drops
Some good news for Wilkes County as the latest unemployment numbers come in. At the end of March, Wilkes had 1635 people out of work, equating for 5.1% of the county’s workforce. That’s down from the end of February, where 1814 people were hunting for a job. Also the workforce itself grew, from 32049 at the end of February to 32167, meaning that 118 people have come into the county over the past month. The news wasn’t all good however as only Caldwell and Surry have a higher unemployment rate of the eight county region surrounding Wilkes. Caldwell’s jobless rate is at 7.3% while Surry County is just above Wilkes at 5.3%

Wilkes Teacher Facing Charges
Charges have been brought against a former teacher here in Wilkes County. 26-yr-old Stephen George Kennedy is facing charges of second degree statutory rape and taking indecent liberties with a student along with other crimes of a sexual nature. Kennedy worked as a teacher and wrestling coach at North Wilkes Middle School and also at North High until leaving his post last year. He now faces possibly over 10 years in jail if convicted on all charges. Sheriff’s deputies were alerted to the situation over the weekend, as the parents of the student involved came forward. According to detective Steve Cabe other charges are pending further investigation in the case.

Opening Night
Last night was opening night for the new Larry Stone Family Center for Performing Arts at the Wilkes County Schools' new central office. Several hundred people ate dinner and watched entertainment by students in the new facility that seats 600 people. The 8,500-square-foot performing-arts center has an auditorium that features a stage, lighting, sound system and a grand piano. The center is part of the new central office complex that will house system's administrative offices, a 100 seat boardroom, an art gallery for student work, instructional training rooms, technology labs, a kitchen/catering area, space for Communities in Schools, and a space in the back for students to build a Habitat House.

Focus On The National Day Of Prayer
Since 1988, Americans have gathered together on the first Thursday of May, setting aside time to pray and ask God’s blessing on our nation. Coming up tomorrow, 3WC will be bringing you complete coverage of the Wilkes County events for the National Day of Prayer, in place of our regular programming including Focus on the Foothills. Local Business Falls Victim To Thieves
Sheriff’s deputies were called out to Precision Fabricators on Monday, after thieves paid a visit to the business. When the owner came to open up the store, he discovered that an estimated 250 ft. of copper wire was missing from where it had been stored outside. Nothing else was damaged or even touched in or around the business itself. There is however a suspect in the case and deputies are continuing the investigation.

Wilkes Facing Possible Postal Rate Increase
If the recent increase in gas prices wasn’t enough, now comes news of another crunch to hit your wallet. The Postal Service announced yesterday that it wants to raise the price of a first class stamp. If the increase goes through, the price of a stamp would climb to 42 cents, up three cents from the current rate. Also Express Mail would rise under the proposed plan, climbing to $16.25 from the current price of $14.40. And the price hikes could cause a chain reaction in places such as bookstores. The cost of bulk-mailing weekly magazines would be raised 2 cents, to 20 cents a copy and all presorted catalogues will rise to 33.6 cents. The U.S. Postmaster General explained to reporters on Wednesday that the agency desperately needs the extra money, thanks to the increase in gas prices. According to Postmaster General John Potter, every time gas goes up a penny, it costs the postal service an estimated $8 million dollars. If the change is approved by the Postal Rate Commission, it will take effect starting in 2007.

Gas Thieves Target McGrady Fire Department
The rise in gas prices led to thieves targeting one of the local fire departments earlier this week. Sometime early Monday morning, thieves broke into the McGrady Fire Department on Sparta Road. Nothing was missing from inside and no damage was done, however one of the fire trucks had approximately 7 gallons less then when it was parked over the weekend. The assistant fire chief called sheriff’s deputies out after noticing that one of the sliding glass doors leading into the building had been shattered. Estimated damage was placed at $300 and that investigation continues.

3WC Healthwatch: Food For Thought
It turns out that mom was right about eating your vegetables, as we explain in today's 3WC Healthwatch. A study has been released in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showing that people who eat foods rich in antioxidants are less likely to have vision problems as they get older. Foods rich in vitamins C, E and zinc, along with beta carotene help to lower the risk of macular degeneration, according to the study. Over a thousand people were used in the study, which took place over an eight year period. Those who had a diet containing carrots, eggs, grains, peppers and potatoes, among other antioxidant rich foods were 25% less likely to be affected by the disease. Doctors said that if people begin following such a diet now, it'll help prevent problems 10 to 15 years down the road.

Thieves Run Off With Lawnmower
Who would steal a push mower? That’s what a man in North Wilkesboro is wondering today. After doing some yard work earlier this week, he parked the mower and went inside his house. Monday afternoon, he came outside to find the vehicle was missing. No one in the area could recall hearing or seeing anyone near the property during the morning hours, but the investigation continues.

Vandals Strike Local Home
Vandals hit a home on Lump Road earlier this week, but never made it past the front door. The only thing damaged was the front door of the building, which was called in by an employee of the electric company who came by to read the power meter. The home itself had been abandoned for some time, as the owner had moved out of state and put the property up for sale. That investigation is ongoing.

More Jobs Coming To Morganton Area
Good news for people in Burke County, as more jobs are headed to the region. A Canadian water bottling company announced plans this week to open up a new plant in Morganton, a move that would bring in 53 new jobs and an investigation of over $11 million. The Ice River Springs Water Co. plant will be located just off of I-40 and will bottle spring water, in addition to manufacturing their own plastic bottles to use. The move comes thanks in part to a $100,000 grant from North Carolina, along with an additional $100,000 given out by Burke County.

All The Milk That’s Fit To Spill
Works crews were out Wednesday morning cleaning up an accident on Highway 29 in Greensboro. Just before 5am a truck driver lost control of his vehicle and the tanker wrecked, spilling most of the milk stored inside. Police had to reroute traffic for the morning and most of the afternoon, as it took almost six hours just to get one lane open due to the spilled milk.

Raleigh Schools Ranked In Nation’s Top 100
Two North Carolina schools rank in the Nation’s Top 100, according to an article put out by Newsweek. Raleigh Charter School was ranked 53rd in the nation this year and nearby Enloe High School came in 59th. Each year Newsweek ranks schools across the nation based on a math formula. They take the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests finished by the students and divide that by the number of seniors who graduated. The magazine said the yearly project is designed to try and honor schools that do the best job in convincing average students to challenge themselves and take college level courses.

NC Department Of Public Instruction Made Mistakes
Some questionable decisions have landed the State Department of Public Instruction in financial trouble, according to an audit that was released this week. What the auditor found was that department officials turned too much financial control over to a special consultant, leading to some major holes in the budget. $6035 was spent to create a Reading First program, designed by the federal government to help train teachers in the areas of reading and writing. However $870 of those funds went to the children of the consultant who developed the program. In addition, the head of the Reading First program ran up over $1000 in unauthorized travel reimbursements along with $2559 in program expenses that included buying 80 rolling tote bags. After the report was released, the Reading First director was ordered to refund all unauthorized reimbursements and the audit has been sent to Attorney General Roy Cooper’s office, to determine if any laws have been broken.

High School Baseball Tonight
Coming up later tonight, 3WC will have an extra helping of our Game of the Week. Wilkes Central is playing host to North Surry, in a game with major playoff implications. The winner of tonight’s matchup is guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs while the loser will be stuck at home watching. We’ll go on the air with the McDonald’s pregame show at 6:45 and then turn things over to Ken Byrd at 7pm for the first pitch.

UNC Lands High School Quarterback
On the college football scene, the UNC Tarheels have landed another big time recruit, one with a local connection. High school junior Mike Paulus, a quarterback from Syracuse New York committed to join the Heels freshmen class of 2007. The 6’5 210 lb. Paulus turned down offered from LSU, Miami and Tennessee to join North Carolina’s team, after a season that saw him throw 23 touchdown passes and toss for 2100 yards. Paulus said that the opportunity to compete for a starting job helped lure him to Carolina, where he’ll be playing just up the road from his older brother. Greg Paulus is the starting point guard at Duke University.

NBA Assistant Interested In State Job
More news from the NC State coaching hunt, as another name has been entered into the hat. Detroit Pistons assistant coach Sidney Lowe, when talking with reporters this week, said that he’d be interested in returning one day to his alma mater to work as head coach. Lowe was a member of the 1983 national championship team for State, but one obstacle stands in his way. The 46-yr-old Lowe doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree, which is one requirement that Wolfpack officials have set for their next coach.

Panthers Resign Fordham
The Carolina Panthers continue to put pieces of the puzzle together, this week resigning offensive tackle Todd Fordham. Last season Fordham served as the number one reserve on the offensive line, subbing in for both Travelle Wharton and Jordan Gross. Now he’ll compete for a roster spot with rookie Rashad Butler and several of the undrafted free agents brought in this week.

Other NFL News
Taking a look at other news around the NFL, another former basketball player is making his way onto the football field, one Tarheel fans remember all too well. Former George Mason forward Jai Lewis signed a deal this week with the New York Giants, giving up basketball for a career in the NFL. Giants officials plan to use the 6’7 ft. 290 lb. Lewis as an offensive lineman, defensive end and possibly also in the tight end position. Another undrafted rookie making headlines is John David Washington, a running back who signed this week with the St. Louis Rams. Washington, who comes from NCAA Division II university Morehouse, is the son of Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and will be competing for a backup role on the team.

State Election Results
Taking a look at the election results from last night, it was David Blust winning the Republican primary for the 45th District of the North Carolina Senate. Blust had 61% of the vote to Garwood’s 39%. Blust will now advance to face Democrat Steve Goss in the November election. Also winning in last night’s primary election was incumbent Tracey Walker, who took the Republican primary for the 94th District of the NC House. Walker got 61% of the vote, while his challenger Barry Brown received 39%. Walker will go up against Democratic challenger Judith Porter this November.

Local Results
In the local races, the field is set for this year’s county commissioner election. In the Democratic primary, it was Luther Parks and Matt Ledford advancing to the November election while on the Republican side it was Zach Henderson and David Day moving on. For the Board of Education race, two seats were up for grabs between four candidates. Karen Reeves was elected to another term, her third on the board with 30% of the vote while Francis Tharpe also finished with 30%, winning a seat in her first campaign. Finally in the Republican primary for Clerk of Court, it was Janet Handy taking 40% of the vote and moving on to the November election. Handy had served as the interim appointee to the position since former clerk Shirley Randleman retired last year. Handy now moves on to face Democrat Brenda Barber in the November election.

Deputies Bust Drug House
Responding to a tip, sheriff’s deputies discovered a crack house on Dowell Ridge Circle this week. After obtaining a search warrant, deputies went inside the home and found drugs, cash and weapons. 70 rocks of cocaine were found hidden in a dresser drawer in one of the bedrooms and deputies also found drug paraphernalia including a metal crack pipe. Two pistols and police scanners were also seized from the house, along with $421 in cash. After running the serial numbers, deputies discovered that a scooter outside of the house had been reported stolen several days earlier. 55-yr-old James Arthur Bailey was arrested and charged with drug possession with intent to sell and distribute, along with maintaining a dwelling for the sale of drugs. 39-yr-old Pamela Jane Bailey was arrested and charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Medication Stolen From Hayes Home
How could someone break in without leaving any evidence behind? That’s what a Hayes man is wondering today. He had to be rushing to the hospital on Monday, then returned later that night to find someone had gone through his medicine cabinet. Taken from inside was all of his pain medication, along with some other pills. However despite the theft there was no sign of a break-in or anything else damaged in the house. That investigation continues.

Duke Energy Takes Major Hit
Bad news today for stockholders in Duke Energy, as the company reported a large drop in profits for the first quarter of 2006. Net income for Duke was reported at $358 million, which translates into 37 cents a share, from January to March. In this same period last year, the company reported $866 million in profit. One thing for investors to consider however is that profits from the newly acquired Cinergy Corporation were not included, however the cost of the acquisition was.

Vandals Target Local Worksite
Vandals hit a local worksite earlier in the week, causing over $200 in damage. When work crews arrived Monday at the site on Foster Payne Road, they found that someone had cut all of the locks off of the storage units, stealing several tools inside. There are however suspects in the case and that investigation continues.

More GM Vehicles Recalled
Bad news for more GM owners, this time involving your trucks. An estimated 400,000 GM trucks have been recalled, to to a malfunction in the brake light system. All 2004, 2005 and 2006 models of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are included in the recall, along with the 2006 models of the Isuzu I-280 and I-350. The problem comes from a malfunction in the brake lights, due to faulty installation. After an extended period, the brake lights in the truck may go out completely or stay on permanently. Also as a result of the malfunction, cruise control on the vehicles will become inoperative. Owners can take the vehicle back to the dealer they bought it from for a free repair.

Thieves Run Off With Everything But The Kitchen Sink
Thieves broke into a house under construction this week, running off with everything but the kitchen sink. When the construction crew returned to the site on Monday, they found several thousand dollars in tools had been taken from a storage building. The thieves broke into the building, then raided it, stealing several saws, a nailgun, an air compressor and over a dozen other items. That investigation is ongoing.

Driver Killed In Surry Wreck
One person was killed in an accident Tuesday morning in Surry County. A West Virginia woman was turning off of Interstate 74 but didn’t pay attention and merged right in front of a tractor-trailer, who couldn’t stop in time to avoid an accident. The 26-yr-old woman was killed in the wreck, which blocked the eastbound lanes of Highway 89 for several hours before things were cleared up at 11am. The truck driver walked away from the accident unharmed and no charges are expected to be filed.

Taheri-Azar Indicted For Attack
A UNC Chapel Hill graduate facing nine counts of attempted murder was indicted on Monday. Back on March 3rd, Mohammed Taheri-Azar drove through a popular hangout known as the Pit, attempting to run over a crowd of students. Later in court, Azar said that he was acting in retaliation for the Muslims killed across the world by the United States. In addition to the attempted murder charges, Azar faces nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon. No trial date has been set in the case.

Police Hunting For Charlotte Arsonist
An arsonist is loose in Charlotte today. Officials in the Dilworth community made that announcement this week, after three fires were ignited over the last seven days in the area. All total, an estimated $800,000 in damage was done before firefighters could get the fires under control. Police do have a description of a possible suspect, although details are slim. The suspect is believed to be a short and skinny person with blonde or light brown hair.

Transportation Secretary Visits North Carolina
North Carolina got a visit from a member of the President’s cabinet on Tuesday, as Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta went through Charlotte. Mineta discussed his plans to help make it less painful for people to pay at the pump. He’s calling on American manufacturers to create more fuel efficient vehicles and also encouraging people when possible to try public transportation such as buses or the new light rail system being built near South Boulevard.

More Jobs Leaving North Carolina
Bad news for any North Carolina workers at Carolina Mills plants, as the company announced this week that it will be going through a major change in June. At the end of June, all of the company’s yarn manufacturing in the United States will come to a close, meaning thousands of people will be put on the unemployment line. Here in North Carolina, over 300 people will be out of work, with plants closing in Maiden, Lincolnton and Statesville. Competition from overseas was given as the main reason for the change.

High School Scoreboard
Around the local high school scene last night, it was Forbush beating North Wilkes in varsity baseball 10-0. With the win, the Falcons lock up the Mountain Valley Conference regular season title after a year that saw them go undefeated in conference play. In earlier action it was the JV boys of Forbush beating North Wilkes 6-2 and in softball the Lady Falcons beat the Lady Vikings 12-0.

Old Friend Returning To UNC Charlotte
Taking a look at the college basketball scene, an old friend is returning to the sideline at UNC Charlotte. To fill the void left behind when two of his coaches left for other jobs, Bobby Lutz brought in Rob Moxley. The 37-yr-old Moxley served as Lutz’ assistant for seven years before leaving to take the same job with Maryland. Now he returns with a new title, that of associate head coach. Moxley said the chance to work as an associate head coach and help out an old friend in the process convinced him to return to the Queen City.

Panthers Sign Free Agents
With the NFL draft having come and gone, a lot of college players are out trying to impress a team and get an invitation to training camp. The Carolina Panthers signed 13 rookie free agents this week, giving all of them a chance to make the squad. Quarterback Brett Basanez from Northwestern will have a shot at competing with Stefan Lefors for the third string job. The 6’2 ft. 210 lb. Basanez had 10,580 yards in his college career to go along with 996 yards rushing. Also making the list were offensive tackles Adam Stenavich from Michigan, Seppo Evwaraye from Nebraska and Albert Toeaina from Tennessee, in addition to cornerback Jarrett Bush from Utah State, UCLA cornerback Marcus Cassell Oregon defensive end Devan Long and Greensboro native Adam O’Conner. The 6’8 ft. 270 lb. O-Conner won the national strength and conditioning award last season as a defensive end for William & Mary.

NHL: Hurricanes In Playoffs
On the ice last night, it was the Carolina Hurricanes advancing to the Eastern Conference semi-finals with a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadians. Cory Stillman scored the game winning goal in overtime, as the Hurricanes take the series 4 games to 2. Up next Carolina will face the New Jersey Devils.

Red Bull Entering Nextel Cup A Little Early
Around the Nextel Cup circuit, a new team will be entering the field slightly ahead of schedule. Red Bull Racing, which is set to have two Toyota cars on the Nextel Cup in 2007, announced plans this week to run in at least five races this season. However the Toyota Camry won’t be approved for competition until next year, meaning that Red Bull will have to run another vehicle in the 2006 races. The company is building a Dodge Charger to use in its’ limited schedule and hunting for a driver, with the frontrunner currently being Bill Elliot.

News From The Commissioners’ Meeting
For the last time before the primary election, Wilkes County commissioners met and discussed several items last night. The BROC agency asked for an extra $17,252 to last until the end of the fiscal year, as they’ve already exhausted their budget. The problem comes from increased gas prices, as they’ve had to raise the amount of reimbursement drivers get for delivering meals. BROC drivers travel an estimated 900 miles per day, five days a week and the bills are starting to pile up. In addition, the agency has seen an increase in the number of people who come out to the Fairplains complex looking for either a meal or assistance. Commissioners unanimously approved the motion. Also a resolution was put before commissioners to promote the Yadkin River Heritage Corridor, an ambitious project put together by the Planning Department. Over the next few years, the counties of Wilkes, Caldwell, Surry and Yadkin will be working together to connect the Greenway trail, beginning at Fort Defiance in Happy Valley, running through the current Wilkes Greenway and on into Surry County. Once the project is finished there’ll be canoeing, fishing and other activities available for people to take part in. Commissioners approved the project and allowed Planning Officer Eddie Barnes to get started with the next phase. Gary Page also brought before the commissioners a Medicaid Relief Resolution, calling for the state to either put a cap on the amount counties spend on Medicaid or completely take over funding. North Carolina is one of only two states that requires counties to pay part of the Medicaid cost. This year, Wilkes had to contribute $5,012,330 to the program, an increase of over 60% from the year 2000. The resolution passed and will be sent to the General Assembly. Also the commissioners approved resolutions designating May as Workforce Development Professionals Month and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.

Clean Water Bond Makes It To The Ballot
People going to the polls this November will have a bond referendum placed before them, after last night’s commissioner’s meeting. County commissioners approved the 2006 Clean Water Bond, allowing it to be placed on this November’s ballot for citizens to decide. Across the state , $16 billion worth of repair and other water projects are needed in the 100 counties. People would have the chance to vote yes or no this fall, determining if the state should sell bonds in order to pay for the needed repairs.

Wilkes Community College Asks For Money
Wilkes Community College will have more money coming in for repairs and upgrades, thanks to county commissioners. The school had requested that an additional $165,000 be given to them before the end of the fiscal year, so that they could continue with needed repairs and also some proposed improvements. As the money for this project would come from the existing fund balance, Keith Elmore suggested that $56,000 be given out now and the remainder of the money be set aside in next year’s budget. His motion was defeated 4-1. The commissioners then voted to approve the full $165,000 this year, again with a 4-1 vote. Keith Elmore was the lone dissenting vote.

National Day Of Protest Not Affecting Wilkes
People across the country stayed out of work on Monday as a National Day of Protest in support of illegal immigrants. Around North Carolina several Tyson plants shut down to avoid problems with their production schedule. However here in Wilkes, the effects were barely noticed. At the local Tyson plant officials said that a few people were out of work today, but not enough to affect the day’s schedule. Officials said that things went on a regular schedule with no interruptions. In other places around town the protest was more visible, as the Monte Del Ray restaurant was closed for the day.

Election Day Arrives
As people head out to the polls today, there are a few changes in store. We mentioned last month that due to the fire at the Clingman Community Center, the polling place for voters in the New Castle Precinct has been moved to the Ronda Clingman School gym. Now the Mt. Pleasant Precinct has been moved as well. Voters in the Mt. Pleasant area who cast their ballots on May 2nd will now be heading out to the Mt. Pleasant School Media Center instead of the cafeteria. Polling places across the county will be open today starting at 6:30am and continuing until 7:30pm tonight.

Tools And Other Items Stolen From Local Church
Thieves broke into the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church over the weekend, running off with over $100 worth of merchandise. Early Sunday morning, church officials found the radiator hose on the bus had been cut and someone had damaged the bus doors, while stealing the license tag. The thieves also broke into the church’s pump house, where they cut an electrical cord. That investigation continues.

Criminals Attempt To Steal Money
A Wilkesboro woman got a surprise phone call earlier this week, from Western Union. The caller informed her that he had someone trying to wire $500 from her bank account to a person in New York and needed her personal approval for the transaction. The woman refused and through Western Union discovered that someone had obtained her personal information over the internet, including her social security number, bank account, full name and date of birth. Information was turned over to sheriff’s deputies in the case.

Cash Taken From Hays Home
It’s not a good idea to leave money lying around, especially when other people are in your house. A Hays man had an estimated $7000 stolen from the dresser in his bedroom, where he had kept it stored. There is a suspect in the case, as he had allowed another man to live in the home for the last month and after the theft the person vanished. Information was turned over to sheriff’s deputies and that investigation continues.

Thieves Run Off With 4-Wheeler
Thieves hit a home in the McGrady community over the weekend, driving off with the homeowner’s 4-wheeler. Someone broke into a shed on the property and rode off with the vehicle, but it’s unclear how they got inside as there was no damage done to the shed. Nothing else was taken from the property and that investigation continues.

Recall Ordered Of GM Vehicles
A recall has been ordered of several different GM vehicles this week. GM has called back the 2005 models of the Cadillac SRX and STS, due to a problem with the rear suspension. After an extended period of time, parts of the rear suspension toe link can separate because it wasn’t welded properly. If this happens, the vehicle’s steering would be affected and could cause an accident. You can return the vehicle for a free repair to the dealer that you bought it from. A hotline has been set up for anyone with questions at 1-866-982-2339.

Always Lock Up Before You Leave
It’s always a good idea to lock up before you leave. A Wilkesboro woman found out why earlier this week, after thieves ran off with over $500 worth of merchandise. She had packed the car on Boone Trail and then went inside a nearby store. The woman came running back out when she heard the car alarm going off. By the time she arrived at the vehicle, no one was in sight but plenty of damage was done. An estimated $250 worth of damage was done to her car’s radio and $300 in cash was missing from inside. That investigation continues.

One Car Totaled In Wal-Mart Accident
One car was totaled over the weekend trying to make it out of the Wal-Mart parking lot. A Wilkesboro man was heading through the parking lot when he slowed down for another vehicle, driven by a Wilkesboro woman. Both vehicles stopped at the same time and then decided to start up again, slamming into each other in the middle of the parking lot. No one was injured, but estimated damage to the woman’s car was placed at $1500. The man’s car was damaged less severe, with estimates placing the cost of repair at $350.

Lottery Already To Change?
The state lottery isn’t even one year old yet and already some lawmakers are wanting to change the way it’s run. Members of the General Assembly are looking to guarantee that lottery revenue will be added to the current education budget, not brought in to replace money already earmarked for the school system. Lawmakers plan to bring the issue up for discussion next week as we approach the mid-point of election year. An estimated $400 million is expected to be brought in by this year’s lottery games.

State Contract Was Illegal
A North Carolina judge has ruled that one of the state’s contracts given out to purchase supplies was not only unfair, but cost taxpayers extra money. A lawsuit was filed against the state by Corporate Express, a company who failed to win the bid for the contract. However the Colorado based Corporate Express believes the process was rigged, because the consulting firm hired by North Carolina had worked for the winning bidder, Home Depot, for several years. After reviewing the facts & hearing testimony, Judge Gus Gray said that he believed the state was overcharged to the tune of $10.8 million and expects changes to be made soon.

Billy Graham To Be Honored
When the Southern Baptist Convention gathers together in Greensboro next month, a very special ceremony will take place. The Rev. Billy Graham will be honored at the June meeting as a statue created in his honor will be unveiled. The statue shows Graham with arms outstretched before a giant cross, holding a Bible in one hand. The statue’s creator said that he designed the image with arms wide open to symbolize an invitation to all people to accept Christ. After its’ unveiling, the statue will take up permanent residence in Nashville, Tennessee.

Charlotte Students Protesting Illegals
As supporters of illegal immigrants gathered yesterday across the nation, so did groups of their detractors. The Young Republicans at UNC Charlotte have started selling bricks, as a form of protest against the influx of illegals from all countries. The “Buy A Brick, Secure Our Nation” campaign allows people to purchase a brick for $5, then get a personalized message put on it. The group has the support of North Carolina Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, along with Tennessee Senator Bill Frist.

High School Baseball Tonight
The regular season is wrapping up for high school baseball and the 3WC Sports Team will be out later tonight as the playoff race shapes up. We’ll going on the road to Viking County, as North Wilkes plays host to Forbush. The Falcons have yet to lose in conference play, so a win tonight by North could really shake up the Mountain Valley standings. We’ll go on the air at 6:45pm with the McDonald’s pregame show and then turn things over to Ken Byrd at 7pm for the play by play.

Wake Forest Facing Changes
Wake Forest is facing some restructuring of their athletic department after a member of their basketball staff quit over the weekend. Director of basketball operations Tim Fuller has resigned, leaving to become an assistant coach at Fairfield. Fuller has been the director of basketball ops at Wake since 2004, after playing at the school from 1996-2000.

Recruits Coming In For Football
While the basketball team suffers, good news on the recruiting front for the NC State football team. One more high school junior has committed to the class of 2007, joining wide receiver Steven Howard from Olympic High School in Charlotte. 6’6 ft. 257 lb. tight end George Bryan announced this week he’ll be joining the Wolfpack. Bryan, who will wrap up his senior season next year at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, turned down offers from the UNC Tarheels, East Carolina, South Carolina and Clemson to attend NC State. Bryan runs the 40 yd dash in 4.78 seconds and can also play receiver and defensive end, in addition to tight end. Wolfpack coaches plan to exploit that talent, by moving him around at all three positions. One of the biggest reasons Bryan picked State is due to the fact both his father and grandfather are diehard Wolfpack fans.

Minor League Scoreboard
One game taking place last night around the local minor league circuit, as it was the Winston Salem Warthogs beating the Fredrick Keys 7-4. The Hogs ended a three game losing streak with the victory, thanks to a great pitching performance from starter Michael Moat, who only gave up one run in five innings of work. Moat earned his first win of the season and brought his ERA down to 0.63, the best on the team. Game two of the series takes place tonight at Fredrick, with Adam Russell getting the start for Winston.

NASCAR Results
Around the Nextel Cup circuit yesterday, it was Jimmie Johnson taking the win at Talladega in the Aaron’s 499. Tony Stewart came in second, Brian Vickers third, Jeff Burton finished fourth and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top five. Next up drivers head to Richmond this weekend for the Crown Royal 400.

Wilkes’ Contribution To Lottery Nears One Million Mark
Wilkes County’s contribution to the state lottery is quickly approaching one million dollars, according to a report 3WC News obtained on Friday from the Lottery Commission. As of April 28th, the county had spent $639,600 on lottery tickets, ranking 48th out of the entire state. Out of the eight counties surrounding Wilkes only Caldwell and Iredell have generated more lottery revenue. Iredell ranks 23rd, having spent $1,490,700 and Caldwell is ranked 33rd, having spent $927,000 on the lottery. Overall in North Carolina $93,890,400 in lottery revenue has been brought in, with over 58 million tickets sold.

Wilkes County Schools Above NC Average
A new study has been released from the NC Child Advocacy Institute, detailing the conditions in each county here in the state. What the report found was that Wilkes County schools actually spent more than the state average per student. On the whole, Wilkes County spent $6993 per student, while the state average was $6702. In fact, Wilkes spent more than some systems with over ten thousand students including Johnston County which spent $6546 per student and Wake County which spent $6768. Stay tuned, coming up later this week in the 3WC Nes, we’ll be taking a look at the full report from the Child Advocacy Institute and what it means for Wilkes County

Rabies Clinic Coming Up
With warmer weather on the way, it’s important to get your pet vaccinated as soon as possible. Here in Wilkes County, a series of vaccination clinics will be going on over the next week in several locations. The cost to get a dog or cat vaccinated is $7 each and you must present proof of a current rabies vaccine in order to get the 3-yr-shot. Under state law, it’s illegal for a dog or cat four months or older to go around without the rabies vaccine. In each clinic, a licensed vet will be giving the shot and all dogs must be secured on a leash when they’re brought in. Cats meanwhile must be in a carrier or a box. Later today, clinics will be held from 6:30-7:30pm at Boomer Community Center, Millers Creek Elementary, Mt. Pleasant Elementary, Mtn. View Elementary, Southeast Community Center and Traphill Elementary. Vaccine clinics will also be held at four other sites on May 6th.

Car Stolen From Traphill Residence
A Hays man walked outside Thursday morning to find his car had been stolen. The keys had been left inside overnight and it appears the thieves just got in and drove off. No one in the area could recall hearing or seeing anything unusual during the night, however a few hours later deputies found the car wrecked at the intersection of Cane Creek Church Road and Gowings Knob. Over a thousand dollars worth of damage was done and the investigation continues.

Fox To Have Wilkes County Office Open
As we’re knee deep in the political season, people have issues for their elected representatives. This being the first week of May, Congresswoman Virginia Foxx will have her office in Wilkes County open. On the first and third Friday of the month, the congresswoman has representatives available at the Wilkes County office building from 2-4pm. If you’re not able to make it out during those hours, you can also send your comments or concerns to the congresswoman via her website, which is located at www.fox.house.gov.

3WC Techwatch: Must See TV
A new creation could soon be affecting what you watch on TV, as we explain in today’s 3WC Techwatch. Researchers at Phillips Electronics have developed a new type of technology that may start being built into new television sets. For a fee, it would allow the broadcast networks to literally freeze the channel when a show goes to commercial, making it impossible for the person sitting at home to channel surf. Officials with Phillips said that the only way people would be allowed to change channels on the new system is if they paid some sort of fee directly to the network, in exchange for a password. If all goes according to plan, these new “pay per view” tvs could hit stores next year.

Blood Drive Later Today
There have been several blood drives going on over the last few days, in an effort to help rebuild the area’s supply. But during slow periods such as the summer months, if there aren’t any wrecks or massive surgeries, why do we constantly need more blood? It's due to the fact that blood is a living product, one only good for forty two days. After that time period it has to be thrown out. Two blood drives are going on today across Wilkes County. From 2-6:30pm you can give blood at First Baptist Church and then from 3-7:30pm you can donate at the Traphill Volunteer Fire Department. In order to schedule a time to give the number to call is 838-4563.

Be Careful When Carrying Pesticides
North Carolina’s Agricultural Department has put out a warning for all farmers this weekend regarding pesticides. Apparently there have been several accidents when transporting the chemicals and the department released some tips to consider. First, make sure that the chemicals are separated from any food, seed, grain or livestock feed. Also do not carry pesticides in the passenger seat of your vehicle. The reason being that vapors can be released from the canister and prove deadly to the driver and anyone else in the vehicle. Also when purchasing pesticides, make sure to check the product labels are clearly seen and also tighten any caps, plugs or stoppers that appear loose.

Pastor Indicted On Federal Charges
A Charlotte pastor is facing jail time after being indicted over the weekend on federal charges. Pastor John Henry Walker of Macedonia Baptist Church was charged with tax evasion and making false statements to banks, along with lying to federal officials. It’s believed that Walker lied about his income, hiding an estimated $550,000 and failed to pay over $125,000 in federal income taxes.

Jobs Coming To Wilson County
Good news for people in Wilson County today, as more jobs are headed to the region. The Sandoz company, which makes generic drugs, announced plans over the weekend to expand its’ current Wilson County facility, which will bring in an estimated 65 new jobs. The jobs come thanks in part to a grant of $150,000 from the One North Carolina Fund.

One More Candidate Bites The Dust
The bad news continues for the NC State basketball team, as their coaching hunt continues. After meeting with officials from the Wolfpack last week, former UNC coach and player Phil Ford was rumored to be in the running for the State job. However the weekend came and went with a different story being told officially, that Ford was never offered the position. However time is ticking away for the Wolfpack, as recruiting season is in full swing and they're without a leader for the team.

NC Players Fill Out Draft
This past Saturday the NFL held their annual draft, with NC State’s Mario Williams becoming the first pick. The defensive end, who was selected by the Houston Texans, became the first ACC player in history to be picked #1. Also taken in the first round were Williams’ teammates Manny Lawson and John McCargo. Lawson was picked by San Francisco in the first round and McCargo was taken by the Bills. That was the beginning of a draft filled with players from North Carolina schools. Wolfpack linebacker Stephen Tulloch was taken in the 5th round by Tennesee, while his teammate, cornerback Marcus Hudson was taken in the 6th round by San Francisco. Another Wolfpack player, tight end TJ Williams, was selected by Tampa Bay in the 6th round. Defensive tackle Chase Page was the only North Carolina player selected in the draft, taken in the 7th round by San Diego. Wake Forest was also represented by punter Ryan Plackemeier, who was taken in the 7th round by Seattle.

Panthers Loaded Up
The Carolina Panthers plugged holes and added depth with their draft picks this year, starting with Memphis runningback DeAngelo Williams. Williams was the Panthers’ first pick, after a college career that saw him run for 6,026 yards, only the fourth back in NCAA history to do that. Fresno State cornerback Richard Marshall was taken in the second round. Marshall will also be counted on to handle some of the kick return duties for the Panthers. Linebacker James Anderson from Virginia Tech was taken by Carolina in round three, followed by Miami offensive tackle Rashad Butler Ohio State safety Nate Salley, Virginia Tech tight end Jeff King, Virginia Tech center Will Montgomery and defensive end Stanley McClover from Auburn were all taken in day number two.

NHL: Carolina Hurricanes Win Again
On the ice last night it was the Carolina Hurricanes pulling out the 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadians. With the win, Carolina moves ahead in the playoff series with a 3 games to 2 lead and can close it out Tuesday night to advance.

On the Nextel Cup circuit, weekend showers delayed the running of the Aaron’s 499. Drivers will start their engines later today at Talladega with Elliot Sadler sitting on the poll. Tony Stewart will start second and Carl Edwards will take off in third.

What Does The Bush Announcement Mean?
On Tuesday, President Bush announced plans designed to lower the cost of gasoline. But how will they really affect your wallet? Bush called for a temporary stoppage on gas deposits made to the national petroleum reserve, releasing those gallons back to the public. Administration officials said that the reserve had enough stored up that even in the face of a major crisis, there would be enough to distribute. Deposits will begin again in the fall. Also the president ordered that environmental rules for gasoline be halted, to help meet the growing demand. What that does is remove the restrictions companies have in developing their gas products, allowing them to keep the gas free of additives such as ethanol that are put in to meet the clean air standard. That could mean a better quality of gas at the pump this summer but some analysts are advising caution. The new guidelines mean that a higher sulfur content is also possible in the gas. Coming up tomorrow in the 3WC News, we take a look at what that extra sulfur could mean and some warning signs to help prevent long term damage to your car.

Thieves Hit Wilkesboro Home
Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a mobile home in Wilkesboro on Monday after thieves paid a visit. Over a thousand dollars worth of merchandise, including a set of speakers and some DVDs were taken from the residence. The owners had moved out of the home several weeks ago after it had caught fire, but kept some of their materials inside for storage. However the fire damage prevented them from being able to lock the door and thieves walked right in. There is a suspect in the case and that investigation continues.

With the upcoming Share-A-Thon and Singing in the Foothills later this summer, there are a lot of events set up to support Ebenezer Christian Children’s Home. But what’s going on now at the home? How far along are they with the Hope home? And what do they have planned for the future? Coming up on tomorrow’s Focus on the Foothills, 3WC’s own John Wishon will be Brian’s guest as they’ll be talking about the upcoming projects to benefit Ebenezer and a little about the Home itself. Baby Teethers Recalled
Before you give that teether to your baby, there’s some news you need to hear. A recall has been ordered of five different styles of teethers, put out by The First Years Inc. 500,000 of the teethers have been called back due to a possible contamination of bacteria inside. The company has learned that in several liquid filled teethers, the bacterias aeruginosa and putida can be found. If somehow the teether gets punctured and a baby ingests the liquid, that can cause serious illness. The recall involves all Disney Days of Hunny Soft Cool Ring Teethers, all Disney Soft Cool Ring Teethers, the Sesame Beginnings Chill and Chew Teether, the First Years Cool Animal Teether and the First Years Floating Friends Teether. A hotline has been set up to get more information at 1-866-725-4407. You can also get information from the company’s website at www.thefirstyears.com.

Be Careful Where You Leave Your Keys
It’s always a good idea to take your keys with you when you leave. A Wilkesboro woman found out why earlier this week. Monday night, she had come home and parked her car, leaving a set of keys inside. Later on, she heard noises outside and saw a man entering the vehicle. He grabbed the woman’s car keys, before slashing all four tires and running off. The homeowner was able to identify the vandal and warrants were taken out on 36-yr-old Brian Keith Icenhour for breaking & entering, misdemeanor larceny and property damage. An estimated $275 worth of damage was done to the vehicle.

Samaritan’s Kitchen Needs Help
It’s hard at times to put food on the table and also pay your bills. Here in Wilkes, several organizations reach out and help people who are struggling through hard times, including Samaritan’s Kitchen. Now however the Kitchen finds itself needing some help of its’ own. So many people have been by in recent weeks that the shelves are almost empty and there aren’t enough workers to prepare meals on the weekends. If you can set aside thirty minutes or three hours, whatever you can spare, please give the Kitchen a call at 838-5331.

Student Charged After Hostage Situation
A Chapel Hill high school student is facing charges today after igniting a hostage situation Monday night. 17-yr-old William Barrett Foster walked into a classroom at East Chapel Hill High around 5pm on Monday, pulling out a shotgun and taking hostages. A sophomore from the school along with a teacher were held inside, as Foster repeatedly fired the weapon. No one was injured and within an hour he took off running out the door. The school was placed in lockdown while officers searched the area for Foster, who was discovered by his parents and put in the hospital. It’s still unknown what caused the teenager to bring the gun to school, however as a result he’ll face charges once released by the doctor. Foster will be charged with possessing a firearm on school property, discharging the weapon on school grounds, assault and two counts of second degree kidnapping.

Search Continues For Two Brothers
Officials in Charlotte are continuing the search for two brothers that have gone missing. Monday night, two boys walking down Birchcrest Drive in Charlotte were approached by someone in a vehicle. They climbed in and the driver took off. Now two days later no one has heard or seen the boys since. Witnesses place the time of the disappearance at 7pm and describe the vehicle that came up as a dark blue SUV. 9-yr-old Trevell Bellman was last seen wearing jean shorts, a gray short-sleeve shirt and white Airforce One shoes. His brother, 10-yr-old Latrell Adgerson was wearing black mesh shorts, a yellow short sleeve shirt and light blue Nike shoes. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-704-334-1600.

Piedmont Natural Gas Facing Fines
A North Carolina utilities company is facing almost a half million dollars in fines if it doesn’t change its’ current policies. Piedmont Natural Gas was ordered to improve customer service by the NC Utilities Commission, which told the company that it will be fined $100,000 for each month next winter that things stay the same. In addition, another $100,000 fine will be handed out each month if the company continues to estimate certain bills instead of going out and performing a meter reading. As a result, Piedmont has promised to double their customer service staff before the proposed September 1st deadline.

Great Battery Roundup Begins
Virtually everyone has an old car battery lying around the house somewhere and every week you promise yourself it’s going to the dump. One North Carolina company is looking to solve that problem and help save the land at the same time with the Great Battery Roundup. AAA of the Carolinas is now paying $1 for every car battery that people bring in to one of their affiliated locations. AAA officials said they wanted to help cut down on contamination brought on by the illegal dumping of car batteries in dumps and some waterways. That deal ends on April 29th.

Accused Thief Turns Herself In
Wake County officials got a surprise this week when Elizabeth Christopher turned herself in. The 20-yr-old had warrants out for her arrest on suspicion of stealing over $2 million worth of merchandise from a home in Apex. Christopher and her husband had worked in the home, helping out the owners by doing different jobs. Then in late February someone broke in and ran off with jewelry, coins and some electronics from inside. Then next day, the couple had vanished, pawning off the items in shops stretching from Florida to Colorado. Christopher had been arrested in March on similar charges up in Colorado, but then released from jail. She and her husband returned to North Carolina, where she turned herself in this week.

Free Baseball Clinic Coming Up
Baseball players ages 5-10 years old will have an opportunity next month to work on their skills with the Wilkes Wildfire team. On May 20th, a free clinic will be held over at the VFW Field from 2-4pm. The focus of the clinic will be on helping the kids develop their hitting skills. However space will be limited to just 30 kids for the clinic, so if you want to sign your child up, you can call 667-3867 or 927-3348.

Two Wolfpack Players Set For First Round
With the NFL Draft set to start on Saturday, players are waiting to see which team will pick them up. According to scouts and analysts, two players from North Carolina schools are set to go in the first round. Defensive end Mario Williams from NC State is almost a lock to go in the first five picks. The 6’7 ft. 295 lb. Williams is a pass rusher that could one day rival Julius Peppers of the Carolina Panthers, according to scouts. The Texans, Packers, Jets and Saints are all interested in signing him. Williams’ teammate from the Wolfpack, fellow defensive end Manny Lawson is also considered a first round lock. The 6’5 ft. 241 lb. Lawson however is expected to make a position change in the NFL. Too small to match up against offense lines, Lawson will most likely become a linebacker in the pro scene. The Chiefs, Patriots, 49ers and Buccaneers all have an interest in drafting Lawson.

Former Coach In Critical Condition
Some sad news today for the ACC as a former football football coach for both UNC and Wake Forest is fighting for his life. Former coach Bill Dooley is in critical condition after surgery last week to fix an aneurysm. Dooley worked with the UNC Tarheel football team from 1967 to 1978, claiming the ACC title in three of those years. Later on he took the same job at Wake Forest and guided the Deacons to their first bowl game in almost 20 years. Over a 26 year coaching career, Dooley has a record of 162 wins and 125 losses. Dooley’s family has asked for people’s prayers as he struggles to recover.

Wachovia Championship Has Mickleson
In golf, two big names have committed to play in the Wachovia Championship this May. The event in Charlotte, which takes place May 1st-7th, has landed Masters champion Phil Mickelson. Mickelson has finished in the top ten both times he’s played at the championship and will be looking for number three this year. In addition, David Duval has also added his name to the list of commitments.

Change Of Pace On The Busch Circuit
Some changes could be coming soon on the Busch circuit as NASCAR plans to experiment. NASCAR wants to separate Busch from the Nextel Cup, with not only different drivers but now possibly different vehicles. Plans are being put together for Busch drivers to have their choice of several different car models, although no definite candidates have been announced yet. If the deal goes through, Busch drivers would also get the option of switching over to a V-8 engine instead of the current V-6 used. All Nextel Cup cars run on a V-8 motor. A decision is expected before the end of the season.

Ballot Out Now For Singing News Awards
Fans of Southern Gospel music have sent in their votes and a new Top Ten List has been released for this year’s Singing News Fan Awards. The ballot is out now in the May edition of Singing News magazine and our own John Wishon made the Top Ten in the Small Market DJ Of The Year category. Fans can now cast their ballots to narrow the field down to five in each category and then those five will go on to the National Quartet Convention for a chance at being selected.

A Return To Cold Temperatures
Bad news for anyone looking forward to summertime weather as a cold front will be moving into Wilkes by Wednesday. The front is moving our way from the northwest and is expected to drop at least another inch of rain before leaving sometime next week. According to the National Weather Service, the time to break out the umbrella is today and tomorrow, as there’s at least a 50% chance of rain til Thursday. Temperatures over the next few days are expected to struggle just to reach 60 degrees, as forecasters believe the front will stall over North and South Carolina.

3WC Healthwatch: The Road To Lower Blood Pressure
High blood pressure can be a problem for anyone from nine to ninety two. But it turns out one simple activity might dramatically reduce high blood pressure in senior citizens. In today’s 3WC Healthwatch, a report was recently released from the Oregon Research Institute that found the road to good health may be laced with stones. Researchers did a study of 108 volunteers over a 16 week period and found that after just 30 minutes of walking each day on cobblestones, the group’s blood pressure dropped significantly. Moreso than the control group, which had been walking on regular pavement. The reason for the difference? The group doesn’t have a clear answer, but believes the smooth and uneven surface of the stones help stimulate nerve points in the body that don’t get used as often otherwise. With these nerves running at full steam, it takes pressure off other areas and allows the body to relax. More tests are being conducted but the group suggests that if you want to lower your blood pressure, make a walkway of your own. Find some smooth but uneven stones, possibly in your creek bed, put them into the ground as a walkway and go over them for about 30 minutes each day. Within a few weeks your blood pressure could take a nose dive back into the normal range.

Help Needed For Yadkin Cleanup
Coming up next month, anyone and everyone is being asked to lend a hand or pick up a shovel. As part of National River Cleanup Week, which is May 8th through the 13th, volunteer crews will be out picking up trash on the Yadkin River. For the section of river between Roaring River and Ronda, work will be going on May 12th. Then one day later on May 13th, cleanup crews will head to the section stretching from Ronda to Elkin. The work each day will last from 10am til 2pm and for more information you can call 659-0596.

Wreck Near 421 Damages One
One car was damaged after an accident near Hwy 421 over the weekend. A Purlear woman was pulling into the parking lot of the Addison just off of 421, but didn’t notice a concrete pole directly in front of her. She slammed into it, causing several thousand dollars in damage and totaling her car. Estimated damage to the vehicle was placed at $2000. Thankfully no one was injured in the wreck.

Recall Issued Of Ice Cream
Bad news for all you ice cream lovers out there. Harris Teeter has ordered a recall of all 1.75 quart cartons of its’ Sundae Carmel Cone Crunch ice cream. The reason being that peanuts could be in some cartons without it being advertised on the box, leading to potential problems for anyone with a peanut allergy. The affected cartons all have the UPC code 7203643026 and customers can return the product for a refund. In addition a hotline has been set up at 1-800-432-6111 to answer any questions.

FBI Director Comes To Charlotte
North Carolina played host to an important guest on Monday, as FBI director Robert Mueller was in town. Mueller took a tour of the Charlotte FBI branch and announced that investigations were continuing to plug leaks in the organization. Last week a senior analyst was fired after admitting that she leaked classified documents to the Washington Post. Mueller also said that he was concerned people would forget September 11th as time passes and explained that we need to stay vigilant against terrorism.

Missing Boy Found In SC
A North Carolina boy that had been missing since April 15th was located in South Carolina over the weekend. The body of Primtvio Ledesma washed up on a section of Myrtle Beach and discovered by vacationers. The 13-yr-old had been on vacation with his family two weeks ago when he vanished. Now it’s believed that Ledesma got caught up in a rip current and taken out to sea.

Furniture Market Providing Jobs
In High Point, company officials from around the world are coming in for the furniture market this week. While the event itself brings several billion dollars into the local economy, it’s also helping out with economics of a different sort. Several hundred thousand furniture workers have been laid off in the area as plants have shut down and moved to Mexico. With market exhibitors needing help moving their product, some of these unemployed factory workers have found at least temporary jobs. In fact, 13000 of them, according to a study done by UNC Greensboro.

Another Plant Shutting Down In Alamance
Bad news for people in Alamance County today, as another textile plant will be shutting its’ doors. Cortina Fabrics has been in the area since 1982, producing mesh fabrics for use by pro athletes and other companies. Now the company is closing down operations in Alamance and putting 95 employees out of work. Company officials said the move was necessary due to the continuing flood of overseas imports.

Little League Scores
Some Little League scores to report from last night. In the girl’s softball coach pitch division, it was the Braves over the Dodgers 8-5. In minor league softball it was the Phillies over the As 12-1 and the Braves over the Dodgers 9-2. In Little League baseball’s coach pitch division it was the Mets over the Rockies 8-4 and the Yankees over the Indians 6-3. In minor league baseball, it was the Indians over the Rangers 14-4, the Angels beat the Red Sox 12-0 and the White Sox slid by the As 4-2. In the major league baseball schedule, it was the As shutting out the Yankees 7-0 and the Angels barely squeaking by the White Sox 5-4.

High School Baseball Tonight
If the weather cooperates, we’ll have high school baseball on the radio tonight. Surry Central heads over to Moravian Falls for a game against the Wilkes Central Eagles. The first pitch is set for 7pm and we’ll go on the air with the McDonald’s pregame show at 6:45pm. And speaking of baseball, one varsity game on the schedule last night as the East Wilkes Cardinals made the trip down to North Iredell. Unfortunately the Cardinals fell just short, losing to North 4-3.

Former Tarheel Coach Switching Teams
Taking a look at college basketball, a former Tarheels coach is swapping schools. Matt Doherty accepted an offer on Monday to become the new head coach at Southern Methodist University. In his first season at Florida Atlantic, Doherty guided the Owls to a 15-13 record. The team he takes over, the Southern Methodist Mustangs, finished 2006 with a 13-16 record, 10th in Conference USA.

Manning Signs With Chicago
In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers will probably be looking for a cornerback in the draft now that Ricky Manning has left the team. Manning signed a deal over the weekend with the Chicago Bears for 5 years and worth a reported $21 million. Because Manning signed an offer sheet, the Panthers had an option to match the deal, which they declined because doing so would put them over the salary cap with draft picks still to sign. As a result, the Panthers get Chicago’s third round pick in this Saturday’s draft.

NHL: Hurricanes In Playoffs
On the ice last night, the Carolina Hurricanes continue to struggle in the NHL playoffs. They lost to Montreal 6-5 in double overtime, dropping to the edge of elimination at 0-2 in the series. The next game will be Wednesday night up in Montreal.

Rumors Flooding NASCAR About Sponsor
In NASCAR, rumors are flying about some possible changes on the manufacturing side. Nothing has been confirmed, but news outlets are reporting that one of the big manufacturers for the Nextel Cup circuit could be pulling out soon. Officials from Dodge, Ford and GM all denied the reports, saying that they have a strong relationship with the circuit, a sentiment echoed by the teams.

Changes In Store For Clingman Polling
For anyone heading out to the polls on May 2nd, there’s going to be a change of plans in the Clingman area. Due to the fire at the Clingman Community Center, the polling place for voters in the New Castle Precinct has been moved to the Ronda Clingman School gym. Polling places across the county will be open on May 2nd starting at 6:30am and continuing until 7:30pm that night.

Big Turnout For Family Center Opening
Politicians and other dignitaries from across Wilkes County turned out for the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Kulynych Family Life Center. The event was held at 4pm Thursday afternoon, with most of the county commissioners on hand along with State Senator John Garwood and Representative Tracey Walker. Sheriff Dane Mastin and Wilkesboro Mayor Norman Call were there as well. After the ribbon cutting itself, Susan Whittington from the Rainbow Center welcomed people, calling the project “not a building, but a commitment between government, businesses and individuals”. She also gave a personal story about why working at the Rainbow Center was so important, talking about a young girl she met at a Christmas party whose soul appeared to be gone due to the horrible things that had happened in her life. She also explained that this Family Life Center will affect not just Wilkes County, but will be used to help kids and families across the entire Northwestern region of the state. Once the center is up and running, they will hold counseling sessions for couples considering divorce, families dealing with stress or those who have recently lost a loved one. In addition, the center will also provide substance abuse therapy and bring in specialists to help educate the community about certain issues and health concerns.

Thieves Hit North Wilkesboro Home
Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a home in North Wilkesboro earlier this week, after thieves ran off with a woman’s weedeater. The incident happened at a home on the Suncrest Orchard Road Wednesday evening, as a woman returned to find both her weedeater and a battery charger stolen, along with an air compressor. There was no sign of a break-in and no damage done to the property itself. There is however a suspect in the case and that investigation continues.

Fundraiser Being Held For Prison Ministry
Families in Wilkes County have a loaded day of music, food and information waiting on Saturday as Faith Christian Assembly is holding their Southern Explosion 2006. The event, which begins at 10am and lasts til 5pm that afternoon, will include nine different musical groups, a KidsFest with an air castle and other games. Also people can come in to take part in the Community Health Connection’s annual Healthfest event. Child ID’s will be done by the Wilkesboro police, the county’s Health Department will perform several different health screenings free of charge and doctors will be on hand to discuss different medical tests. Southern Explosion will be held at the Faith Christian Assembly, located at 161 Greenhill Road behind the Canipe School of Dance. All proceeds from the event will go to the Wilkes Prison Ministry and for more information people can call 667-8777.

Blood Drive Going On Today
As we count down to the end of school, it’s a time of year when proms and parties are going on across the state. Unfortunately with these events each year comes an increased risk of traffic accidents. To help keep the blood supply above critical levels, a drive is going on today at the Louisiana Pacific plant at Roaring River from 10am til 2:30pm. With low turnouts at the recent drives, the Red Cross is asking people to come out and donate if at all possible. To set up an appointment, the number is 838-4563.

More Jobs Leaving Caldwell County
Bad news for people in the Caldwell County area, as more jobs are leaving the region. The Paxar company, which makes printed t-shirt labels and tags, announced plans this week to layoff 112 employees of their Lenoir plant. The jobs will be terminated by December, in a move company officials said was necessary as they switch the work to plants in other countries. The Lenoir plant will remain open however with a reduced workforce.

Police Go Hunting Pajama Bandit
Officials in Greensboro are hunting for a man in his pajamas today. Late Wednesday night, a man came into the Texaco Gas Mart, wearing a t-shirt, pajama pants and some black bedroom slippers. He asked for some cigarettes and then indicated he had a gun, ordering the clerk to hand over all the money in the register. A description of the thief was turned over to local authorities and police say that it matches a suspect in yet another robbery, one that happened two hours earlier on nearby Pisgah Church Road.

Company Shutting Down Local Operations
The economy in Davidson County took a hit this week, as Billings Transportation announced it will be shutting down operations and selling the business. The logistics division of the trucking company was bought by Aero Logistics, a group based out of California. What that means is almost all of the 225 employees at the company’s Lexington division will lose their jobs, along with almost 100 more across the country.

Reward Offered For Robbery Information
Over one thousand dollars has been offered for information leading to an arrest in a Kernersville robbery case. Purdue Pharmaceuticals has put up $1000 and the Kernersville police are adding an additional $2000, for anyone who can provide leads in the robbery of a CVS store. On March 17th, a man came into the CVS store on Union Cross Road in Kernersville, pulled out a handgun and ordered an employee to provide him with drugs. After he received the drugs, the man then took off out the door and into a waiting car. The man is described as being a white male about 5’9ft, wearing a white baseball cap, dark jacket, blue jeans and had tattoos on his knuckles. North Carolina Missionaries Arrested
In some world news, several North Carolina missionaries were arrested in China, after a raid on a Christian retreat. No official charges were filed and the missionaries were released soon after, but police officials in the Chinese city of Kunming are accusing the five Christians of being “foreign religious infiltrators”. While the accusation is not an official criminal charge, it ties in with the Communist Party’s belief that missionaries are being sent in from other countries to use the gospel as a weapon, converting the people and then overthrowing the government. All five have ties to churches in the Greensboro area and were working at a Christian retreat center outside of the city when the raid occurred.

High School Baseball Tonight
If the weather cooperates, we’ll have high school baseball on the radio tonight as the 3WC Sports Team heads up the road to Cardinal Country. East Wilkes will be playing host to West, in a battle of Northwest 1-A teams. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm tonight and we’ll go on the air with the McDonald’s pregame show at 6:45pm.

UNC Player Misses Out On Award
In women’s college basketball, a player from the UNC Tarheels just barely missed landing the top award in the country. UNC’s Ivory Latta was one of five finalists for the Honda Award, given out each year to the nation’s top female college basketball player. Seimone Augustus took home the trophy, marking the second straight season she’s won the award.

Carroll Expected Back
A day after putting up 24 points in the Bobcats’ season ending victory over Philadelphia, Matt Carroll’s future seems to be secure. Team sources said this week that they plan to pick up the option on Carroll’s contract, guaranteeing him a spot on the roster for next season. In his third year in the NBA, the Notre Dame grad averaged 7 points and shot 81% from the free throw line.

McCauley Out For Subway 500
Kurt Busch will have a new guy working with him from pit row this Saturday, during the Subway 500. Crew chief Roy McCauley is recovering from surgery he had on Tuesday to treat a blocked artery. The 36-yr-old will be replaced on the No.2 Dodge team by Matt Gimbel, who will serve as a fill-in until McCauley returns.

Former Panther Signs With Giants
In the NFL, the rebuilding of the Carolina Panthers continues as linebacker Brandon Short agreed to a deal with the New York Giants. Short had been released by the Panthers in a salary move March 2nd, but team officials had discussed a possible return with his agent. Taking Short’s spot in the starting lineup will be either last year’s first round pick Thomas Davis or second year player Adam Seward.

Neighbors’ Store Robbed On Monday
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a robbery that happened early Monday morning at Neighbors’ store. Just after midnight as an employee was getting ready to lock up, a white man came in holding a knife. The employee ran outside as the robber jumped over the counter & took the money drawer. He then ran out the door and into a waiting red mustang. A description was given over to sheriff’s deputies of both the driver and passenger of the car. One hour later a similar red mustang was pulled over by Surry County deputies, in addition to a jeep that was following behind. The driver of the mustang was arrested on several outstanding warrants, however when deputies came back to the jeep it was empty, despite having lights on inside and the motor running. Several dollar bills were found scattered in the floor of the jeep, all of which were taken as evidence and both vehicles impounded. A security camera from the store is also being examined.

Wilkes Hunters May Soon Go Out On Sunday
Some changes could be coming for Wilkes County hunters, as state wildlife officials consider some changes to the guidelines. The current ban on Sunday hunting might be lifted, after a study on the subject is complete. Members of the National Wildlife Resources Commission are studying what, if any effect, removing the ban would have on individual counties. Within the next few months, registered hunters will also be getting either a phone or mail survey asking their position on the issue. North Carolina has had a ban on Sunday hunting ever since 1869, when it was passed for religious reasons.

Thieves Drive Off With Elkin Woman’s Car
An Elkin woman got a surprise Monday morning when she looked outside. Her car had gone missing. Sometime during the night, thieves had broke into the vehicle and driven it off, despite no one in the area being able to remember hearing or seeing anything unusual. A description of the car, a 2001 silver Oldsmobile Alero, was given over to sheriff’s deputies and that investigation is ongoing.

Wreck Near Tyson Totals One
One car was totaled and another damaged after a wreck Monday morning near Tyson. The incident happened as two people were driving in the Tyson parking lot. A Millers Creek woman turned to exit her lane, but didn’t notice a Lenoir man heading in the same direction. The two vehicles collided, with estimated damages placed at $1800. Thankfully no one was injured in the crash.

Money Stolen From McGrady Home
Thieves hit a home in McGrady on Monday, running off with over $3000 in cash. The owner returned from visiting her husband, who is in Baptist Hospital, having hidden away some money before leaving. When she went to get it, the money was missing. All total an estimated $3800 was stolen from the home, however there was no damage done or any sign of a break-in. There is a suspect in the case and that investigation continues.

Focus On Economics
Throughout the political season, concerns have been raised about the state of the economy here in Wilkes. But what may have gone unnoticed is that at the end of February, the county hired a new director for the Economic Development Corporation. Now almost two months into the job, Director Don Alexander explains how his approach, working from a marketing perspective, gives Wilkes an advantage. Director Alexander will be doing that during tomorrow’s Focus on the Foothills program. They’ll be discussing some of the challenges facing the Wilkes job market and also some of the positives ahead. That’s coming up tomorrow at 1:05pm right after the midday stock report.

Recall Ordered Of Buick & Cadillac Vehicles
More car owners may find their vehicle going back into the shop as certain Buick and Cadillac cars are under recall. The order affects all 2006 models of the Buick Lucerne and the Cadillac DTS. A malfunction has been discovered in certain cars, as they were built with a power steering hose that doesn’t meet specifications. After a certain amount of time, the hoses can separate and start leaking fluid, making it a lot harder to steer the vehicle. State News

Two Officers Charged With Murder
Two officers in Davidson County are facing murder charges today. Back in January, inmate Carlos Claros Castro died after a confrontation with jail officials. Upon examination, the state medical examiner’s office found that Castro died from multiple blunt trauma injuries to his head, chest and other areas. Now the investigation has led to charges being filed against Sgt. Brandon Huie and Lt. Ronald Parker, the two officers involved in the altercation. Both are facing second degree murder charges for Castro’s death.

Man Removed From Death Row
A man sentenced to death after committing three murders has been taken off death row this week. 55-yr-old Elton McLaughlin was found to be mentally retarded, with an IQ of just 70. Last month, a judge in U.S. District Court ruled that he be removed from death row and re-sentenced, a move the state attorney general’s office opposed. However now several weeks later, the attorney general’s office is dropping their appeal, saying that it was in the best interest of future cases. McLaughlin was hired by Shelia Worley to kill her husband and then he turned around and murdered her after she refused to pay him, also killing the couple’s 4-yr-old daughter. Under North Carolina law, anyone who scores 70 or less on an IQ test cannot be put to death.

Fort Bragg Soldier Back To Face Charges
A soldier from Fort Bragg has been extradited to North Carolina, to face over 50 different charges. 38-yr-old Scott Kendrick Miller was caught by officials in Kentucky earlier this month, after disappearing from Fort Bragg once his actions became known. The Special Forces soldier is wanted on 53 felony sex charges, most of them involving young children. Miller is currently in the Cumberland County Jail, where he will remain until his court date.

High School Scoreboard
Taking a look around the high school scene last night, it was North Wilkes over Wilkes Central 15-5 in varsity baseball, snapping a losing streak that dated all the way back to March 31st. Next up for the Vikings will be a home game against Ashe County this coming Friday. Also in varsity baseball the East Wilkes Cardinals made the trip to Mt. Airy and pulled off the 10-7 win. Noah Johnson tossed a three hitter for the Cardinals. On the girls side of things in varsity softball it was the Lady Vikings of North beating the Lady Eagles of Wilkes Central 11-5.

Lack Of Coach Hurting State
In college basketball, it’s been bad news for the NC State Wolfpack. Not only do they not have a coach in place yet, but that uncertainty is causing some of their recruits to go elsewhere. High school junior Chris Wright, who had announced his intent to play for the Wolfpack, has pulled back and announced he was looking for another school to attend. In addition three members of this year’s recruiting class are reconsidering their decision to be a part of the Wolfpack. All four said that Coach Sendek’s firing played a part in the decision.

College Football To Be Held In Panthers Stadium
While we’re five months away from the start of the NFL season, football of a different kind will soon be coming to the home of the Carolina Panthers. Bank of America Stadium will play host to a college game on Thursday October 12th. Clemson will be taking on Temple in a game originally scheduled to be played at the Owls’ home field. However due to scheduling conflicts the location had to be changed.

Minor League Scoreboard
Around the minor league last night, it was the Greensboro Grasshoppers getting shut out by Lakewood 7-0. The Grasshoppers committed three errors in the game and only got two hits. Meanwhile up the road in Hickory, the Crawdads beat Delmarva 6-2. Crawdads starter Joe Bauserman got his first win of the season, going six innings and only giving up two runs. With the win Hickory improves to 5-7. In Winston some bad news for the Warthogs, as they lost their fourth straight to Myrtle Beach 5-3. Winston starter Wes Whisler got the loss, after coughing up four runs in four innings of work.

NHL: Carolina vs. Buffalo
In the NHL, Carolina wrapped up the season with a loss to Buffalo 4-0. The Carolina Hurricanes had already locked up a playoff spot, along with first place in their division and let some of their young guys have a chance to play, with mixed results. With the loss Carolina drops to 52-22.
