What The Child Fatality Report Says About Wilkes

On Friday’s newscast, we told you about the recent increase in child deaths throughout North Carolina. Unfortunately the same holds true here in Wilkes County. According to information from the County’s Health Department, 10 children on average die every year here in Wilkes. As of last week, that number in 2005 was already up to 15. Most of those deaths come as a result of premature births and defects. Birth defects don’t automatically mean the child will die, but in order to prevent it, the parents and doctors have to work together. For more information on how to deal with birth defects in your baby, you can contact the Wilkes Health Department at 651-7450. Coming up later this month we’ll be going over the subject in more depth as part of our 3WC Healthwatch.

With people still recovering from the recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast, blood supplies and other items have been sent down by the Red Cross, to take care of the wounded. Gas Hike Due To Delivery

AAA of the Carolinas explained this weekend why there has been a sudden hike in gas prices. In part it’s due to the fact stations are being charged more in delivery fees, as drivers and gas companies are raising their rates. In addition, more credit cards are being used to pay for gas and for each card used, the company charges individual stations a fee, taking away a percentage of the sale. An investigation has been started however, to determine if some stations are using the news as an excuse to raise rates. If companies are found guilty, there could be jail time involved.

UNC System Violates Public Laws

On Friday’s broadcast we told you about Erskine Bowles being nominated as the new head of the North Carolina university system. However a lawyer from the North Carolina Press Association is charging that laws were violated due to a “secret” meeting of the search committee. Not All State Employees Are Checked

Not all state employees here in North Carolina have to undergo background checks. That was revealed this week after two wanted felons were discovered working for the state’s Health and Human Services Department. One woman is currently wanted in Georgia on theft charges, while another employee is connected to a sales scam on Ebay. The department has the power to do background checks, but hasn’t extended the practice to all workers because they are “dealing with other issues”. Most other state agencies perform the checks, but now lawmakers are calling for a change. During the next session, a bill could be presented making it illegal not to do a background check on any person who works for the state.

Lawsuit Over Bible In North Carolina Courts

North Carolina is being sued today, in a case with no actual backing. The ACLU has filed suit based on a perceived problem that hasn’t actually been brought up. The organization is suing to force the state to allow the Muslim Quran and Jewish Torah used along with the Bible when people take an oath in court. This comes after a ruling earlier this year in Guilford County, where two judges determined that it wasn’t legal for a Muslim to take the oath with a Quran. The office of the court has since announced they would uphold the ruling unless a change came from state lawmakers. Meanwhile the State Attorney General’s office has asked that the case be dismissed, since the ACLU has no client to represent.

Easley Throws Out Teacher Licensing Bill

Governor Easley vetoed a bill this week dealing with teacher licensing. Under the plan, a teacher from any other state could be hired here in the state, regardless of their qualifications. Easley said that while North Carolina needs more teachers, he couldn’t lower the standards any more. If North Carolina’s standards dropped any more, they would be one of the lowest in the nation. Both the State Board of Education and the NC Association of Educators supported Easley in his veto. State lawmakers however are planning to gather for a special session and overturn the veto.

Be Careful When Carrying Pesticides

North Carolina’s Agricultural Department put out a warning for all farmers this weekend regarding pesticides. Apparently there have been several accidents when transporting the chemicals and the department released some tips to consider. First, make sure that the chemicals are separated from any food, seed, grain or livestock feed. Also do not carry pesticides in the passenger seat of your vehicle. The reason being that vapors can be released from the canister and prove deadly to the driver and anyone else in the vehicle. Also when purchasing pesticides, make sure to check the product labels are clearly seen and also tighten any caps, plugs or stoppers that appear loose. While pesticides aren’t used that much during the fall months, they can still cause problems.

Officials transformed the Greensboro Coliseum into a shelter for hurricane victims, hiring workers, renting out facilities and doing other things to prepare for the people. All this after FEMA announced that the city would be used as a relief shelter, promising that 500 evacuees were on the way. Somehow this got lost in translation, as no survivors were ever brought to the complex and this week the town was told it wouldn’t be needed after all. Local officials are calling for FEMA to reimburse them part of the cost.

Now Is A Good Time To Break Out The Axe
As we near the end of September, winter is not too far away. And with the winter months comes ice and snow, a small problem if there are dead trees in your area. Fire marshals advise that now might be a good time to break out that axe or chainsaw and cut them down. Otherwise this winter, they could fall on the roads or damage vehicles. It’s even a good idea to cut down unhealthy trees that aren’t dead yet, according to the forest service. The reason being that once winter comes, that tree could quickly die and crash, creating problems you don’t need. You can tell unhealthy trees by several ways. They always have dead leaves, also a hollowing trunk and peeling bark. And who knows, if you have a wood furnace, those trees you cut could help save on your power bill come November.

All For A Can Of Coke

Greensboro Asks For Help With Drivers
Members of a Greensboro neighborhood are tired of people violating the speed limit and so they’re taking the fight to city hall. Residents of Gretchen Lane have asked that at least stopsigns be installed in the area, if not speedbumps to solve the problem. However since Greensboro doesn’t have a speedbump program, their request had to be tabled until a report is created on what it would take to begin one. Traffic problems increased in the area when a new development was built and neighbors are concerned that someone, possibly an elderly person or child coming home from school could become a victim. Stopsigns are supposed to be installed at three intersections in the coming months.

Time Warner Accused Of Overcharging
If leaders in Wilson North Carolina have their way, Time Warner Cable may have a bill of its’ own coming due. Each month, people in Wilson find an upgrade fee tacked on to their regular cable bill. An upgrade that was finished in the late 1990s. The fee is included as part of the standard cable service charge, so it’s hard to notice. City officials have approved a resolution that claims the fee is unwarranted and not only needs to be stopped, but that people in the area should be refunded. Over the last four years alone, that fee has taken $700,000 from local citizens, however a spokesman from Time Warner said that the cost hasn’t even been covered yet. Over five years since the upgrade was actually done, charges for technology improvements still haven’t been made back in profit, according to the company. In fact, Time Warner says the fee will go on for at least another 10 years, to make back the money paid on the project. The town meanwhile has filed an appeal with the FCC.

More Kids Get Sick From Salmonella
In a case strikingly similar to one late last year in Wilkes, some 25 students in Gaston County have become sick from salmonella poisoning. All of the students became sick after attending an etiquette class held at the City Club, a members only institution. While the health department said that food at the club was safe to eat, investigators did announce that the way employees handled it could have caused the problem. Targeted by the investigation was a pot of chicken, cooked by a combination of grilling and baking. Apparently according to investigators, it hadn’t been cooked all the way when delivered to the students. Keep in mind that salmonella is a deadly bacteria, but an infection can be easily avoided simply by washing your hands.

Bobcats Re-Sign Gerald Wallace
In the senior circuit, the Charlotte Bobcats have almost wrapped up their offseason dealings. The team has come to terms on a contract with small forward Gerald Wallace, bringing him back under a three year deal. Wallace, one of the best athletes in the league, was a restricted free agent, meaning that other teams could offer him a deal but the Bobcats had the right to match it. Duke Professor Has Theory On How To Rebuild

You hear politicians in Washington argue about how to rebuild New Orleans, with billions of dollars suggested as the cost to do it. Instead of spending billions, a civil engineer at Duke University has reached into the past for another idea. Henry Petroski is suggesting that New Orleans take a lesson from the city of Galveston Texas, which faced pretty much the same problem back in 1900. 8000 people died in the wake of a hurricane that year which flooded the area. To save the city, the townspeople had to raise it above sea level. Petroski is now suggesting that New Orleans do the same, take the time to rebuild above sea level and save what experts predict will be a 30 year project to fix the flood levees.

This was a one time trial that the county was experimenting with, in hopes that criminals would turn themselves in. Once the numbers come in from this time, a decision will be reached to if it should happen again.

Edwards Presents First Suggestions About Ending Poverty

After failing in his bid for the White House, former Senator John Edwards returned to North Carolina and created a poverty center at UNC Chapel Hill. The center is designed to act as a think tank, studying poverty and coming up with solutions to help solve the problem. The first of those solutions was unveiled this week. Edwards called for a return to Depression era job programs, paying unemployed workers to do jobs such as building parks and bridges. As an example, he cited the Louisiana cities devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Instead of giving money to the residents, pay them to rebuild their city. In 2005 before the hurricane hit, an estimated one million people in this country have fallen under the poverty level.
