Wilkes Man Killed In Iraq
A Wilkes County Navy corpsman was killed last Friday in Iraq. A roadside bomb attack killed 25-year-old Chris Thompson of Millers Creek. Thompson was assigned to a Marine unit and was serving his second combat tour in a job similar to an Army medic. Thompson and another Marine died in the blast about 25 miles west of Baghdad. Chris is the son of Larry and Geraldine Thompson also of Millers Creek. The Thompson's were home around 9:30 on Friday evening when two Navy officers arrived at their house to deliver the bad news.

Christmas In Wilkes Taking Applications
Starting today, applications will be taken for this year’s Christmas in Wilkes program. The program helps each year, by providing needy kids with clothes and toys their parents couldn’t otherwise afford. People can apply from now until Nov. 4th at certain times during the week. You can drop off applications at the North Wilkesboro Rotary Club Building, located behind Cooks in West Park. Monday through Wednesday, you can come by from 11am til 7pm, then on Thursday and Friday, from 11am til 5pm. When coming to apply, parents or guardians must bring a picture ID, proof of their current income and social security cards for both the parents and children. Assault & Robbery At Wilkesboro Business
Wilkesboro police were called out to the Fast Track on Hwy 421 late last week after a fight broke out in the parking lot. A Boomer man had been assaulted in the parking lot, with the robbers taking his wallet. Witnesses described both the suspects and the vehicle they drove off in. After viewing the security cameras and getting a positive identification, warrants were taken out on 31-yr-old Michael Dewitt Ferguson Jr for strong armed robbery, assault and trespass.

Gas Thieves Hit Another Wilkes Business
Despite gas prices dropping around the area, some people here in Wilkes are still refusing to pay. Late last week gas thieves hit the Run-In on Oakwoods Road. A man came into the store, told employees he didn’t have enough money to pay for his gas and left his driver’s license as proof that he’d be back to pay. Instead he drove off down the highway and didn’t come back. Later on that night, Wilkesboro police tracked him down on Hwy 268, where he admitted that he wasn’t planning on returning, despite having left his license. 19-yr-old Tyler Ian Wray was arrested and charged in addition to the gas theft, with drug possession after deputies found marijuana inside his car.

Truck Stolen From Millers Creek Home
Be careful where you leave your vehicle. That proved true for a Millers Creek man last week, after his truck was stolen. He had parked the vehicle near a local store, then carpooled to work. However when returning that night, the vehicle was missing. No one in the area could recall hearing or seeing anything, however the investigation is ongoing.

Lunch Buddy Training Session
Communities in Schools again finds itself short on volunteers as we near the halfway part of the school semester. Over a hundred kids are still on a waiting list, hoping to be paired up with a lunch buddy for the rest of this year. By joining the program, adults agree to meet up for about one hour a day with a kid at one of the local schools. The pair eat lunch together and get to know each other, giving the child a friend that otherwise they might not have. Coming up this Wednesday, a training program for the lunch buddy program will be held from 12 noon til 1pm. Wreck On Collegiate Drive Totals One
A wreck late last week on Collegiate Driver damaged one car and totaled another. A Boomer woman was driving down the road and had to slow down for oncoming traffic. The vehicle behind her, driven by a Wilkesboro woman, couldn’t slow down in time to avoid a collision. That second vehicle was totaled, with estimated damages placed at $2500, while $500 worth of damage was done to the first car. Thankfully however no one was injured in the wreck.

Pistol Taken From Open Car
Always lock your car when you leave. A Wilkesboro woman found out last week that’s especially true when you have a pistol in the vehicle. She had secured the weapon, then left the vehicle unlocked while going to visit relatives. When she returned to the car, the pistol was missing. A description of the weapon was given to sheriff’s deputies and the investigation continues.

3WC Healthwatch: Stress Kills
This next bit of news is for all the men in their 20s and 30s. Your job could literally be killing you, as we explain in today’s 3WC Healthwatch. A study released this weekend by researchers in Finland discovered that stress at work leads to problems in men’s arteries. Just over one thousand people were tested for the study, which found that men with high stress levels usually showed signs of artery disease. That’s where the artery narrows, preventing blood from getting through and leading to a heart attack or stroke. The same study found however, that the problem was unique to men and that women of the same age didn’t suffer the same way, although it was unclear why. The best way to prevent the arteries from narrowing, according to the study, is to make yourself take a day or two off from work at least every two months. That way you can relax and the strain won’t continue to build.

Broke In To Get The Wallet
Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a North Wilkesboro residence over the weekend, after thieves ran off with the homeowner’s wallet. There was no sign of damage done to the property and also no clear indication as to how thieves got inside the home. However the homeowner’s wallet, along with his driver’s license and social security card was missing. Nothing else was stolen from the home. There is however a suspect and deputies are continuing that investigation.

Storms Aid Recovery Of Ancient Ship
The recent storms on the Carolina coast may have helped solve a longstanding question. The wind and rain unearthed some medical supply bowls, two cannons and other debris from the shipwreck some believe to be The Queen Anne’s Revenge. While recent dives haven’t been able to officially determine the ship’s identity, the medical bowls and other collected debris could.

FBI Looking Into NC House Speaker
Less than a week after his political director was accused of violations, State House Speaker Jim Black finds himself under investigation. The FBI this weekend seized records related to Black’s political meetings at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte and also obtained records of Black’s campaign finance reports. Officials say that it’s part of an ongoing investigation into the video poker industry but didn’t specify further.

Jobs Coming To Newton
Some good news today for people in Newton, as 150 new jobs will be coming into the area. Flowers Foods, a Georgia company, has bought out what used to be the Harvest States plant. The area will be expanded to 150,000 square feet over the next four months and 150 new jobs will be created as a result.

More Inmates Possibly Up For Parole
More of the inmates in North Carolina prisons could soon be out on the street, now that a new law has taken effect. Under the new law, the Parole Commission has to attempt to release at least 20% of the eligible inmates that were sent to prison before 1994. Officials say the change will help to free up room for newer inmates, who are more of a threat to society. Just under 4000 prisoners will be effected by the new law.

People Arrested After Dumping Gas
Throughout the area, people have been searching for cheap gas. However over the weekend in King North Carolina, police arrested two men for pouring it out. The two men drove up to a local McDonald’s and poured 60 gallons of gas down a storm drain, before being arrested for illegal dumping. No reason has been given as to why they decided to dump the gas.

Jobless Rate Takes A Fall
Some good news for the North Carolina economy, as the state’s unemployment rate fell to 5.5% at the end of September. That’s down from 5.6% in August and it continues a rebound from the all time high this year, which was 5.7% in July.

Sports Headlines

High School Scoreboard
Taking a look around the high school scene, it was Wilkes Central beating North Surry 10-7. With the win, Central improves to 2-7 on the year. Meanwhile a tough break for West Wilkes, as they fall to Mount Airy 16-0. Mistakes and dropped passes caused problems for the West offense, as the team falls to 6-3 with the loss. Next up they'll take on East Surry, looking for win number seven on the season. And North Wilkes falls against Surry Central, losing 47-12. With the loss, North drops to 1-9 on the year. And finally East Wilkes took care of business on Friday, beating South Stokes 24-0.

ACC Scoreboard
Wake Forest took a step toward fixing their season with a 27-19 win over NC State. Chris Barclay ran 36 times for the Deacons, racking up 117 yards. Wake improves to 3-5, while State falls to 2-4 and drops into last place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Up the road in Chapel Hill, the defense was solid all day for the Tarheels, as they beat the 23rd ranked Virginia Cavaliers 7-5. Ronnie McGill, in his first full game back from injury, ran 23 times for 118 yards. The win pulls Carolina up to 3-3 on the season, tied with Miami for second place in the Coastal division of the ACC. Finally Florida State beat Duke 55-24, in the most competitive game played between the two schools in over five years. Duke freshman Requan Boyette rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown as the team drops to 1-7.

NCAA Scoreboard
Taking a look around the rest of the college scene, it was Memphis beating East Carolina 27-24, dropping the Pirates to 3-4 on the season. It took triple overtime but Gardner-Webb pulled out the 55-52 victory over VMI. Elon was blown out by Furman 45-6 and Appalachian State clocked Wofford with a 49-17 win. Richie Williams tossed for 249 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 73 more. With the win, the Mountainers improve to 5-2, good enough for second place in the Southern conference.

Gordon Wins At Martinsville
It was Jeff Gordon taking the checkered flag Sunday at Martinsville. Points leader Tony Stewart came in second, Jimmie Johnson third, Bobby Labonte fourth and Jeff Burton rounded out the top five.

Hurricanes Blow Out Capitals
In the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes improved to 4-2 on the year with a blowout 4-0 victory over Washington. The Hurricanes took 41 shots during the game but lost rookie goalie Cam Ward, who sprained his left arm after a collision at the net.

Teachers Leaving Wilkes County

Bad news for Wilkes County schools, as just over 10% of our school teachers leave the area each year. By far that wasn’t the highest total in the state last year, but still gives cause for concern. The Department of Public Instruction released the figures for 2004 on Tuesday, highlighting the escaping teachers as one of the state’s main problems. Overall, North Carolina schools averaged a 12% turnover in 2004, which Wilkes fell just short of. Out of the 769 teachers here in the county, 81 left this past year for a job in another school district. That percentage actually places Wilkes near the bottom of the list, in regards to teachers leaving. Harnett County had the highest rate, as 28% of their teaching staff left the county for a new job in 2004. Meanwhile around the area, Elkin schools averaged 19% turnover, while for Avery it was 11%, Alleghany 12% and Surry County was tied with Wilkes at 10%. Clay County had the smallest rate of turnover, with just 3% of teachers leaving the area. To help solve the problem, the State Board of Education plans to make changes in the next year. Among those plans are better working conditions and increased compensation for teachers.

More Counterfeit Money In Wilkes

Counterfeit money continues to pour into Wilkes County, this time the victim was the Pizza Hut in Wilkesboro. Earlier this week, Wilkesboro police were called out to the restaurant, after a manager discovered fake money in with the day’s receipts. While it’s unclear exactly who gave out the fake cash, the money was turned over to police, who are continuing the investigation.

Child Safety Check Coming Up Today

Here in Wilkes, 85% of all child safety seats in vehicles were not installed correctly. Too often, such a problem can lead to serious injuries if the vehicle that the child’s riding in is involved in a crash or even something as normal as a sudden stop for traffic. To help teach parents and other caregivers the right way to install them, a safety seat check is going on today at the Wilkes Health Department. Certified technicians will help show you the right way to install the seats at any time between noon and 1pm. Car Stolen From Traphill Home

Never leave your keys inside the car. A Traphill woman found that out the hard way this week, after being picked up at her home. Her keys had been left inside her car, which was capable of being driven. When she returned later in the day, the car was gone. No one in the area could recall hearing or seeing anything throughout the morning, despite the missing vehicle. That investigation is ongoing.

Focus On The Troops

Here in Wilkes and across the country, people want to show their support of the troops. But to get the soldiers what they need most, items such as fans and phone cards, it usually costs and arm and a leg to ship. That’s where Operation Gratitude steps in. Jennifer Cooper White will be Brian's guest this week for Focus on the Foothills, as they’ll be talking about the program and how local churches and other groups can get involved. That’s coming up this Thursday at 1:05pm, right after the midday stock report.

Thief Gives Back For What He’s Stolen

A Roaring River man parked his truck at home and went inside earlier this week, with half a tank of gas still in the vehicle. The next morning he got in it to go to work and found it was having problems trying to start. After repeated attempts at getting it to start, the man called a mechanic friend. He discovered that all of the gas had been drained from his truck’s tank and replaced with water. There is a suspect in the case, as a local man had been trying to sell gas to people in the area that same morning. The investigation continues.

Fundraiser For Museum With Opening Date Announced

There is less than a month to go before the Wilkes Heritage Museum opens its’ doors to the public. But you don’t have to wait til November 15^th to see inside. Old Wilkes is hosting a fundraiser on November 12^th, where people can come by the old courthouse, listen to music and also see the finished product inside. Coats For Kids Still Going Strong

A lot of people have coats in the closet that never get worn. If you want to give those coats away, Our House has somewhere that’ll take them. The organization, in connection with Christmas in Wilkes, is running their annual Coats For Kids drive. Any and all coats are welcomed, new or used, child or adult size, whatever you have to give will be used and appreciated. Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Bust

A traffic stop by sheriff’s deputies led to a drug bust earlier this week. Deputies had set up a checkpoint on Hwy 16 North when a driver pulled up. They asked both the passenger and driver for identification. The passenger refused and continued yelling at the deputies after they asked for the car to be pulled over. He then got out of the car and came toward the deputies, at which point they pulled their weapons and ordered him to stop and show his hands. Drugs were found on his side of the vehicle, both a small amount of marijuana and also some drug paraphernalia. 31-yr-old Scottie Ray Hamby was arrested and charged with drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Dobson Man Wanted By Police

Officials in Dobson are searching today for a local man who was running a meth lab out of his house. 43-yr-old Glen Spicer is wanted by the Surry County sheriff’s department on charges of manufacturing meth. It’s believed that Spicer is driving a gray Dodge pickup and deputies are asking anyone with information to call 336-401-8900.

Congresswoman Fox To Hold Business Workshop

Government contracts are handed out each year to companies throughout the nation. But why can’t small businesses get involved? Congresswoman Virginia Fox wants to solve that problem, but holding a workshop for businesses in the 5^th district this Friday. During the workshop, government contracting methods will be explained and also local businesses will be shown how they can get involved and compete for bids. North Carolina Among Top 20 In Traffic Deaths

Some disturbing figures from the latest auto safety study. North Carolina was ranked 19^th out of the 50 states in regards to tractor trailer related deaths. In 2004 alone, 198 people were killed in accidents that involved tractor trailers, according to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis. That breaks down to 2.3 deaths for every 100,000 people on the road.

School Closed Down Due To Mercury Scare

A strange student prank led to a school in Granville County shutting down on Tuesday. South Granville High School was closed for safety reasons while officials performed an air quality inspection. Concerns were raised after mercury was released into the air during a science class. A student exposed the mercury and then shared it with others in the class.

Jobs Leaving Asheville

Bad news for people in the Asheville area. 200 people will be on the unemployment line after Unilever shuts down in 2006. The plant has received almost $6 million in incentives from local governments over the last 12 years, but company officials said it would be more cost effective to shut down the plant and outsource the work to Canada.

Skeleton Discovered Near Linville Falls

Officials in Burke County are investigating a discovery at Linville Falls. Two people hiking in the area Monday night came across some skeletal remains just off one of the main trails. Investigators believe that it could be the body of a camper who disappeared last year in the area. There was however no indication how the person died.

Illegal Immigrants In Custody

35 workers at a Durham plant were arrested Tuesday morning, after INS agents found they were in the country illegally. The company the illegals worked for, Cree Inc., is a major contractor with the Department of Defense, helping to build and design radar systems for the military. The immigrants, from counties such as Pakistan and Kenya, are currently in a Johnston County jail cell awaiting deportation.

Huge Marijuana Bust In Stantonsburg

Over one million dollars worth of marijuana was seized in a bust earlier this week in Stantonsburg North Carolina. The plants were found on the border of Wilson and Greene Counties by hunters, who then alerted authorities. Over one thousand plants were cut down and destroyed at the site and officials are still tracking down those involved with the operation.

Tarheel Freshman Out With Injury

Some bad news for the UNC Tarheels, as they may be missing a player when the season begins. Freshman Mike Copeland tore the cartilage in his knee during a scrimmage late last week and had to undergo arthroscopic surgery. The 6-7 forward will miss at least the next four weeks while rehabbing, leaving just nine scholarship players on the roster. The Heels have their first exhibition game November 4^th against Fayetteville State.

Duke Searching For Backup QB

The Duke football team will be one man short against Florida State this Saturday, as backup quarterback Mike Schneider is out. Duke officials wouldn’t explain what was wrong with Schneider, only saying that he was being treated at Duke Hospital for internal problems. However they did say the injury wasn’t life threatening.

Former Deacon Out With Season Ending Injury

In the senior circuit of the NFL, the news wasn’t any better for a former member of the Demon Deacons. The Arizona Cardinals announced on Tuesday that defensive end Calvin Pace, a first round pick out of Wake Forest in 2003, will miss the rest of the season after falling through a window at his home. Pace had to undergo surgery after slicing his arm on the window. He is however expected to make a full recovery.

Childress Officially Changes Drivers

In NASCAR, Richard Childress officially made a change this week, announcing that Clint Bowyer will take over as driver of the car that Dave Blaney currently runs in. Also with the new driver comes a new crew chief, as Gil Martin takes over duties on the car. As for Blaney, he doesn’t plan to retire, but currently doesn’t have any offers to drive next year.

NBA Issues Dress Code

Changes are coming in the NBA this season. This week, the league sent out a letter discussing the new dress code. Players have to appear in what league officials are calling business casual attire before and after games. Gone are the necklaces, rings and ballcaps. Instead come November 1^st, the players will be walking out in suits and ties.

Robbery Monday At Millers Creek Fast Track

Sheriff’s deputies were called out to the Millers Creek Fast Track on Monday, after an attempted robbery. A man came inside the business, pulled out a knife and demanded all the cash in the register. After taking the money, the suspect ran out the door and into a waiting truck, a description of which was turned over to deputies. Officials located the truck near Mountain Valley Church Road and engaged in a high speed chase exceeding 90 mph at times. After turning onto Elledge Mill Road, the suspects lost control and flipped their truck. 24-yr-old Andrew John Rhodes was arrested and charged with armed robbery, while 21-yr-old Luke Harden Luffman was charged with aiding and abetting armed robbery along with fleeing to elude arrest.

Flu season can last as long as seven months here in the U.S., which is why there is such concern over the bird flu. The virus, which currently has no vaccine, is in portions of Asia and Europe, affecting both humans and animals. Now as for your own family, there are some precautions you can take. Don’t use raw or soft boiled eggs in foods that aren’t going to be cooked. Also cook all of your meats and eggs thoroughly. That can help eliminate most strains of bacteria inside. Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Bust

Deputies were performing a license check on Hwy 16 North earlier this week, when a man pulled up and said he didn’t have any registration. After smelling marijuana inside, deputies brought over the K9 unit, who detected drugs in the vehicle. 46 grams of marijuana were discovered, wrapped in six packages behind the driver’s seat. Also two smoking pipes and more drug paraphernalia was found inside. 25-yr-old Jason Michael Crews was arrested and charged with drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a vehicle for the sale of drugs.

Highway Patrol Out In Force

If you see a school bus slowing down on the highway, it might be a good idea to follow suit. Otherwise, there could be blue lights in your rear view mirror and a ticket waiting with your name on it. This is “Stop Arm Violation Week”, as the highway patrol is out looking for drivers who pass stopped school buses. If you’re caught breaking the law this week, five points will be added onto your driver’s license and a $200 fine will be handed out.

Identity Stolen In Another Country

A Wilkesboro woman got a surprise phone call from her bank over the weekend. It seems that someone had been using her debit card..in Spain. The bank had got concerned after the purchase in Spain appeared minutes after the card had been used in Millers Creek. It’s unknown exactly how someone was using the card, seeing as it’s still in the woman’s possession. The information has been turned over to sheriff’s deputies and that investigation is ongoing.

Another Gas Drive Off

Despite the recent drop in gas prices, thieves continue to hit local stores here in Wilkes. Over the weekend, the Run-In on Elkin Hwy was the latest to be a target. A couple pulled up and the woman pumped gas, while the man bought some items in the store. Then without paying, they drove off down the road. Employees inside the store however were able to get a description of both the people and their vehicle, along with a license tag. That information was turned over to sheriff’s deputies and the investigation is ongoing.

Hunting Safety Class Coming Up Tonight

If you’ve been wanting to get your hunting license, this is the time. Coming up over the next three days, there will be a class on hunting safety at the Kerr Scott Ranger Station. The class will last three hours and 20 minutes each night with a test at the end. Once participants pass the test, they can receive their certification. There is no minimum age to attend, however you must be at all three classes in order to take the exam. So if you miss tonight’s class, you fail the entire course. Car Stolen From North Wilkesboro Residence

A North Wilkesboro man left over the weekend for an out of town trip, only to find his car had gone missing when he returned. No damage was done to any part of his property and there was no sign of a break-in. The vehicle’s tag was later found by deputies near Suncrest Orchard Road. Apparently whoever had taken the car was later involved that night in a hit & run accident, which damaged the vehicle bad enough that the thieves abandoned it. It was later towed to a nearby garage, leaving behind just the tag. That investigation is still ongoing.

Mailbox Vandals Hit Another Wilkes Home

Mailbox vandals hit another home in the area over the weekend, this time targeting a North Wilkesboro residence. The woman had gone inside Saturday afternoon, then looked out a few hours later to find the mailbox had been ripped off the post it was on. Despite the noise no one in the area could recall hearing or seeing anything. There is a suspect in the case however and the investigation continues.

Volunteers Needed For Special Olympics

North Carolina’s Special Olympics program finds itself in need of help today. The organization is looking for 700 more volunteers to lend a hand during the games, which go on from November 4-6^th in Winston Salem. There are different jobs involved, from keeping score, to setting up tents, line judging or presenting medals. There are plenty of openings to do whatever you feel comfortable with. Third Sewage Spill In Wilmington Causes Problems

Water has been cleaned up in Wilmington, after sewage line burst for the third time this year on Sunday. Officials were still trying to determine on Monday what caused the spill, as fifteen thousand gallons of sewage flowed out into the Cape Fear River. Officials are saying that the drinking water in the area is safe, however they are asking residents to avoid the area until it’s cleaned up. In July and then again in September, portions of the sewage system burst, spilling wastewater into the river.

Police Still Investigating School Bus Shooting

Officials in Salisbury are still investigating who shot at one of their buses over the weekend. A bus carrying football players back to Salisbury High from an away game was hit by gunfire late Friday night. One person was injured but all the students walked away unharmed. Descriptions of the suspects were turned over to police and the investigation continues.

Natural Gas Prices Going Up Again

Bad news if you heat your home with natural gas. Prices are set for yet another hike. On Monday afternoon, PSNC Energy asked the state Utilities Commission if they could raise residential rates by 11%. That would mean, if approved, homeowners would see their gas bill skyrocket by an estimated $60 a month. Last year during the winter months, the average bill was $112. This year under the new increase, it would climb to $174. The company said they had no choice but to pass their rising costs along to their customers. A decision will be made when the commission meets October 31^st.

Wake County Widow Suing Gun Shop

A lawsuit was filed this week that could affect all gun shops in the state. Patricia Tucker, widow of Wake County sheriff’s deputy Mark Tucker is suing both her husband’s killer and the gun shop that allowed him to buy a weapon. The killer, Matthew Grant, is currently serving a life sentence for the murder, which happened while he was drunk. Mrs. Tucker is suing the gun shop because she claims they should have done a background check before selling the weapon. Had they done so, they would have discovered the man was an alcoholic and had a history of mental illness. The gun shop owner however says that he followed the law and isn’t legally responsible.

Historic Reunion Held Between Raleigh Churches

On Sunday, two churches in the Raleigh area came together for a historic service. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, which was formed by freed slaves, celebrated its’ 138^th anniversary this week and held a service with nearby Cedar Fork Baptist Church, where many of the founding members came from. Both congregations gathered for song, testimonies and prayer as they pledged to continue in the spirit of unity that brought them together. Several more joint services will be held in the future.

Tarheels Lock Up Another Prospect

More good news for the UNC Tarheel basketball team, as yet another recruit has committed for 2006. Brandon Wright, one of the top five high school players in the nation, agreed to put on the Tarheel uniform in 2006. The 6-9 Wright, who averaged 20 points 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots as a junior last season, turned down offers from Duke and Kentucky to join the Heels.

North Carolina Teams Top Big South

As the preseason basketball polls continue to come out, several North Carolina teams are standing tall in the Big South conference. Winthrop University was the unanimous choice to finish in first place, one year after winning both the regular season and tournament title. Coastal Carolina came in second, UNC Asheville third, Liberty fourth and High Point rounded out the top five. The tournament will be held February 28^th-March 4^th and the championship this year will be broadcast on ESPN.

Bobcats Beat Hawks In Preseason

The Charlotte Bobcats took care of business on Monday, beating the Atlanta Hawks 94-88 in a preseason matchup. Brevin Knight put in 22 points and had seven assists, while Melvin Ely had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Raymond Felton added 12 points for the Bobcats, who improve to 2-2 this season.

Update On Panthers

The bye week couldn’t come at a better time for the Carolina Panthers, as several players are walking wounded after Sunday’s game against Detroit. Quarterback Jake Delhomme was shaken up, according to team doctors, who wouldn’t confirm if he had a concussion or not. Also Linebacker Dan Morgan has a dislocated shoulder, wide receiver Kerry Colbert injured his ankle and defensive end Julius Peppers broke a bone in his hand. The Panthers are off until October 30^th when they take on the Vikings.

NASCAR Standings

In the wake of Jimmie Johnson’s win Saturday, the standings in the Chase for the Cup have been reshuffled. Johnson is now tied with Tony Stewart for first place, 11 points in front of second place Greg Biffle. Ryan Newman is 17 back in fourth, with Mark Martin rounding out the top five. Carl Edwards, Rusty Wallace, Jeremy Mayfield, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch round out the field. Drivers head to Martinsville this coming Sunday for the Subway 500.

Braves To Possibly Lose Coach

Just over a week after being eliminated from the postseason, the Atlanta Braves may be losing another battle off the field. Hitting coach Terry Pendleton is being interviewed this week as a potential candidate to take over as manager of the LA Dodgers. If selected, Pendleton would take over the clubhouse from the since fired Jim Tracey, who was let go after the team failed to make the playoffs. The Dodgers hope to name a manager before the end of the week.

Judge Holds Up Wilkesboro Meeting

A planned meeting of the North Wilkesboro town board had to be put on hold Thursday night, after a court order. Superior Court Judge Michael Helms issued a restraining order hours before the meeting was supposed to take place. He ordered that no member of the hospital nominating committee be removed until the hospital board has a chance to present some suggestions as replacements. North Wilkesboro mayor Steve Foster had originally called the meeting to remove several members of the nominating committee and vote on their replacements. The cause of conflict came due to the fact the town board had asked the committee to submit some new names to serve, but instead got names of old members. Out of the four names submitted, three were old members and one was new. The three old members were rejected by the town, because the majority of the board said it was time for new blood to have a voice. Judge Helms has ordered the nominating committee to select three new people and have them ready to present by Nov. 9^th at noon.

Local Restaurant Missing Money

Wilkesboro police are investigating how some money disappeared from the local Burger King late last week. A manager from the store left for the bank, set to deposit $1820. That money never made it to the bank in question and the manager hasn’t been heard from since. A description of the suspect was turned over to police and that investigation is ongoing.

Wilkesboro Man Reappointed To Commission By Easley

A local man was reappointed to the Commission on Children With Special Health Care Needs. Gov. Mike Easley selected Danny Staley to return as part of the commission, which helps to monitor and evaluate the availability of health care to special needs kids in the state. Staley is also the health director for the Appalachian District Health Department in Boone.

Always Look Before Turning

A Greensboro man learned over the weekend why it’s a good idea to look both ways before turning. He was heading down River Street in Wilkesboro, looking to turn into the Run-In’s parking lot. However he failed to check and see if other cars were in the area, instead slamming into a vehicle driven by a North Wilkesboro man. There were no injuries in the crash, however estimated damages were placed at $14,000.

Gas Thieves Re-Emerge In Wilkes

Gas thieves hit another Wilkes County business over the weekend, this time targeting the Fast Track in Millers Creek. A man pulled up in a red sportscar, pumped just over $34 worth of gas and then drove off down the road. Employees inside were able to get a description of both the man and his vehicle, which were turned over to sheriff’s deputies. That investigation is ongoing.

Thieves Break Into Ronda Home

Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a Ronda home late last week after thieves paid a visit. The homeowner returned to find a window open in her living room and a plastic chair leaning up against it outside. Nothing was damaged in the home and the only things taken were several medications from her cabinet. There is a suspect in the case and deputies are continuing the investigation.

Wreck On Curtis Bridge Road Totals Two

A Millers Creek woman was trying to turn into the sheriff’s department parking lot late last week, but couldn’t avoid a collision. She had turned directly in front of a Purlear man, who slammed into her vehicle. The man was injured in the crash but turned down medical attention. Estimated damage was placed at $15,000.

Break-In At Moravian Falls Home

Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a home in Moravian Falls late last week, after thieves came by to do some shopping. Gone from inside was a set of golf clubs, a drill set and a scope rifle. All total the estimated value of the stolen merchandise was $2380. There is however a suspect in the case and deputies are continuing the investigation.

In God We Trust Under Siege

Davidson County commissioners are facing a legal battle to keep “In God We Trust” on their building. The motto was engraved several years ago on the county’s government center, but last year a lawsuit was filed saying that it violated the First Amendment. That suit was denied by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals but the people involved are trying to get it revisited. As such, Davidson County officials have taken their case to the Supreme Court. It’s unknown however when or if the court will hear the case.

Dell Computers Helping Military Families

The Dell computer company is helping military families stay in touch with their loved ones overseas, thanks to a project called Operation Homelink. 150 computers were given to families of the 82^nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg. The setup will allow soldiers and their families to correspond via email. The volunteer organization, which began in 2003, has been working ever since to keep the lines of communication open between soldiers and loved ones back home.

Already Seeing Problems With State Lottery

Less than a month after North Carolina approved a lottery, already problems are popping up. Information has come to light that members of the lottery commission, including a former staffer of House Speaker Jim Black, have ties to lottery company Scientific Games. As a result, commissioner Kevin Geddings said that he wouldn’t vote on issues that involve the gaming company and an investigation has been launched into staffer Meredith Norris, who still serves as the political director for Speaker Black.

Win Dixie Closes Another Center In Charlotte

Hoping to save some money, Win Dixie got their plans approved to shut down a distribution center in Charlotte. A federal judge okayed the move, which, combined with several other closings, will save the company $700,00 a month. So far this year, the company has sold over 100 stores and rejected leases for another 200 as they look to climb out of bankruptcy protection.

Cherokee History Uncovered In North Carolina

An archeologist in western North Carolina has uncovered evidence that the Trail of Tears came through this part of the state. Brett Riggs has uncovered the remains of 30 Cherokee Indian farms in Clay, Graham and Cherokee counties, also discovering evidence that North Carolina roads were used to evict the Indians some 160 years ago.

High Point Church Faces Fourth Break-In

For the fourth time in the past month, a church in High Point has been vandalized. Churchgoers came in Friday morning to Peace Christian Church, only to discover the damage. Someone had taken rocks and thrown them against church windows and other parts of the building. Earlier this month, the gas lines were cut on the church van and someone had attempted to break into the nearby storage shed. Despite all the damage, nothing was taken from the church and High Point police are asking for help in finding the vandals.

Friday Night Scoreboard

Taking a look around the high school scene on Friday, it was North Wilkes falling to North Surry 20-6. Now both teams are tied for last place in the Mountain Valley Conference at 1-8. Meanwhile West Wilkes continues their resurgence with a 43-0 blowout of Alleghany at homecoming. West improves to 6-2 with the win, heading into next Friday’s showdown with Mt. Airy. In our 3WC Game of the Week, Wilkes Central’s homecoming was spoiled by Surry Central, as the Golden Eagles pulled out a 27-7 win. Now Wilkes Central falls in the standings to 1-7, taking over 6^th place in the 7 team conference. Also in regional action, Elkin moves up the ladder to a perfect 8-0 with a 62-0 win over South Stokes and Mt. Airy set the stage for Friday’s game with West Wilkes, beating Bishop McGuiness 28-26. With the win, Mt. Airy stays at 7-1, ½ game ahead of West in the Northwest 1-A conference.

ACC Scoreboard

It was a weekend of missed opportunities and blowouts for college teams from North Carolina. Wake Forest almost upset Boston College, but fell just short in the 35-30 loss. Cory Randolph is proving to be the answer however at quarterback for the Deacons, as he tossed for 193 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 14 more. Next up Wake Forest goes to NC State. Meanwhile the Duke Blue Devils managed just 10 points against Georgia Tech, being blown out 35-10. Freshman QB Zack Assack continues to have some growing pains for the Blue Devils, as he tossed for one touchdown and two interceptions.

NCAA Scoreboard

Around the rest of the college scene, it was Appalachian State beating Georgia Southern 24-7. Richie Williams threw for 161 yards and a touchdown, as the Mountaineers improve to 4-2. They’ll go on the road against Wofford next Saturday. It was Gardner-Webb falling against Coastal Carolina 34-31, East Carolina beating SMU 24-17 and Elon lost to Chattanooga 10-7.

Panthers Pull Out Last Second Win

In the NFL, it went down to the wire but the Carolina Panthers were able to pull out the 21-20 win against Detroit. Backup quarterback Chris Weinke threw a touchdown to Ricky Proehl to seal the victory for the Panthers, who improve to 4-2. Jake Delhomme had to leave in the fourth quarter after being knocked out on a run.

Jimmie Johnson Wins At Charlotte

Despite a failed engine, a cut tire and a blown alternator, Jimmie Johnson came back to win the UAW-GM Quality 500 Saturday. In a race that saw 15 caution flags brought out, Johnson took the win, followed in second by Kurt Busch, then Greg Biffle coming in third, Joe Nemecheck fourth and Mark Martin rounding out the top five.

Preparing For Winter

We’ve all heard horror stories about how the price of heating our homes this winter is going to skyrocket. Now this week Duke Energy confirmed that for people of the Piedmont, saying that their electricity costs would rise by 9% over this same period last year. With prices climbing, here are some tips on keeping your power bill down. First, replace all the old insulation in the attic. Doing that now can save you up to 10% on energy costs this winter, as heat is retained. Also if you have ceiling fans, they can actually help as well. Reverse the blade direction and have it go in a counter clockwise motion. That’ll bring the warm air down from the ceiling and circulate it around the room. Finally for a few dollars, you can install weather stripping around the windows, blocking the cracks that allow air to escape.

Thieves Go Shopping At Millers Creek Home

Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a residence in the Millers Creek community on Wednesday, after over $900 worth of material was taken. The homeowner had locked up and left earlier in the night, but returned to find one of the windows had been opened. Included in the theft was a DVD Player, a CD box, Sony Playstation II, Nintendo Gamecube and several other items. There is a suspect in the case and deputies are continuing the investigation.

Animal Adoption Fair This Saturday

If you’re looking for a pet to take home, the Wilkes Animal Shelter wants to help you find one. Coming up on Saturday, they’ll have an adoption fair going on at the shelter from 10am until 2pm. That’s located at 408 Call Street in Wilkesboro, just below the new courthouse. In addition, the shelter has started a “Pet Look Alike” contest. From now until November 1^st, you can mail in pictures of you and your pet to the shelter and a winner will be announced on November 12^th. Wreck On Curtis Bridge Road Totals Two

It’s not a good idea to drink and drive. A Dayton man showed why on Tuesday, as he caused a wreck on Curtis Bridge Road in Wilkesboro. A North Wilkesboro woman had slowed down to turn off the road, but the driver behind her was too intoxicated to slow down in time and crashed into her vehicle. Estimated damages in the accident were placed at $2000, however thankfully no one was injured. 39-yr-old Christopher B. Vaughn was arrested and charged with DWI.

Tech Report: Protecting Cell Phones

Some new equipment is coming out that will help cell phone users in Wilkes and across the world, as we take a look at it in our 3WC Tech Report. For anyone that has a cell phone or laptop, a new addition could be helping stop theft as soon as next year. Scientists in Finland have created a device that monitors the specific way a person moves, such as walking patterns and hand movements, of which each of us has a different style. Once attached to the laptop or cell phone, the device would be programmed to only respond to the person who bought it. If someone tried to steal the device, it would lock up and send out a signal allowing officials to track it down.

Break-In At DJ’s Carwash

Thieves broke into a Wilkesboro business earlier this week, causing over $900 worth of damage but not taking a thing. Someone cut the alarm at DJ’s Car Wash, attempting to pry open the front door and then when that failed, attempting to bust the lock off the Coke machine. After failing at both, the would be thieves took off into the night. That investigation is still ongoing.

Benefit Coming Up Tomorrow In North Wilkesboro

Coming up tomorrow you can have a good time and help a great cause. A benefit will be going on to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, beginning at 10am at the Bowman Branch Farm in North Wilkesboro. More Identity Theft In Wilkes

A Wilkesboro woman got a surprise when she checked her bank account this week. Someone had been using her debit card. Several purchases had been made in her name over the last few days, despite the fact she had the card in her possession. It’s unknown exactly how thieves gained access to her information, however deputies are continuing the investigation.

Health Department Offering Car Seat Help

85% of child safety seats across Wilkes County were not installed correctly, according to the local SafeKids organization. While this is slightly lower than the national average, it’s still high enough for concern. To help teach parents and other caregivers the right way to install them, a safety seat check goes on during the third Wednesday of the month. In October that falls on next Wednesday the 19^th and it will be held at the Wilkes Health Department. The check will be done by certified technicians between 12 noon and 1pm at the department. Former Transportation Director Pleads Guilty To Fraud

The former transportation director for Wake County schools pleaded guilty this week to committing fraud. Vernon Hatley billed taxpayers in the area for almost $4 million in expenses over a one year period between 2003 and 2004. Hatley then used the money on personal items. Hatley had joined the transportation department out of the U.S. Army in 1994, where he had served as a colonel.

Back To Basics

In Carteret County, officials have had enough of election controversies. So for at least the present, they’re reverting back to paper ballots. It took town officials about 2 ½ hours on Tuesday to count the ballots from this week’s primary, the first time since 1980 that paper ones have been used. Last year over 4000 votes were lost after one of the electronic machines malfunctioned.

Some Rides Unsafe At State Fair

There might not be a lot to choose from when people head out to the state fair tonight. Less than one third of the event’s rides pass state safety inspections, according to reports on Thursday night. A new company, Wade Shows, was used this year to supply the rides, which is why officials from the Labor Department believe they didn’t meet standards. Only 28 rides, out of the 111 on the site, will be available due to safety concerns. That will change over the weekend, as repairs are made.

Travel Agent Takes People For A Ride

Be careful when choosing a travel agent. Fayetteville police are issuing that warning to people today, after a case involving Hummingbird Tours. Eleven people have come out and accused the company of stealing $18,000 from them. They each paid $154 for a bus trip and then an additional $615 for a cruise. However the bus tickets never showed up and when they called the cruise line, their names weren’t in the system. As always before choosing an agent, check first with the Better Business Bureau.

Duke University On Front Lines Of Terror Fight

Duke University will soon be on the front lines of the fight against terror. A $22.25 million donation, given to the school by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will be used to create an anti terrorism center. The goal of the center is to create new drugs to treat the effects of radiation and also determine how much radiation a person has been exposed to. The Duke center is one of eight being built around the country.

Former Representative To Face Jail Time

A former member of Congress will now face jail time, after a trial in North Carolina. Former state congressman Frank Ballance was sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of embezzling money from the nonprofit group he created. The John A Hyman Memorial Youth Foundation, an anti-drug agency, was created by Ballance in 1985 and as a congressman, he send $2.3 million of taxpayer money directly to it. But over the last two years, he had been sending money out of it as well, to the tune of $100,000. The money helped buy his son a new car and balance the books at his law firm, among other things. Ballance was originally elected to Congress in 2002 and stepped down two years later, citing health concerns.

Friday Night Football

Coming up tonight the varsity football teams from three of our local high schools will be in action. West Wilkes will play host to Alleghany in their homecoming game, while North Wilkes is on the road against North Surry. In our 3WC Game of the Week, Wilkes Central will play their homecoming game, taking on Surry Central. In addition before the Eagles’ game, there will be a homecoming parade going on at 6:30 in Wes Steele Stadium. Kickoff for all three games is set for 7:30pm, while we’ll go on the air with the pregame show at 7:15.

Charlotte 49ers Land New Recruit

Despite being just a junior this year, Oak Hill forward Michael Beasley knows exactly where he wants to be in college. The 6-9 230 lb. Beasley, already one of the top recruits in the nation, has committed to UNC Charlotte. Part of the reason he said, was due to the fact one of his friends is an assistant coach at the school, but Beasley also liked the chance he’d have at Charlotte to earn a spot as one of the starting five, an opportunity that might not come his way at Cincinnati or some of the bigger schools out there. Beasley will put on the 49er uniform in 2007.

Clemson Beats Wolfpack In Blowout Fashion

There was no doubt about the outcome in Thursday’s game. Clemson’s James Davis ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Charlie Whitehurst threw for two more. Clemson improves to 3-3 while NC State drops to 2-3 on the season. In order to get into bowl contention, State now has to win four out of the last six games.

Crocker Moving To Trucks

In NASCAR, plans have changed for Erin Crocker. The female driver from Evernham Motorsports, she was supposed to race a full schedule next season on the Busch Series, before moving up to the Nextel Cup circuit. But after finishing no higher than 30^th in her Busch races, Evernham announced that Crocker would split time between the Busch and Truck Series, to help her get used to the different tracks on the circuit.

Injuries To Panthers Cause More Roster Moves

In the NFL, it’s beginning to look a lot like last year for the Carolina Panthers. Six players were listed as questionable for this weekend’s game against Detroit, including running backs Deshaun Foster and Steven Davis. In all, the top four running backs on the depth chart are all nursing injuries for the Panthers, leaving just two healthy backs on the team in Nick Goings and Jamal Robertson. Goings subbed in last season and put up just over 800 yards, so he’ll get the start Sunday if Davis and Foster can’t suit up. Davis has had some swelling in his surgically repaired knee, while Foster is having knee injuries of his own. To add some depth on the roster, Carolina signed running back Alex Haynes to the practice squad. Haynes played at Central Florida University, before signing with the Baltimore Ravens earlier this year.

Bobcats Lose To New Jersey

Playing short handed thanks to injuries, the Charlotte Bobcats lost in preseason action to New Jersey 95-76. Out of those who did play, forward Antonio Meeking had 14 points for the Bobcats, while rookie Raymond Felton added 10. Next up is Miami later tonight.

Meth Lab Uncovered In Wilkes

Sheriff’s deputies received information earlier this week about a possible meth lab operating here in the county. After going to the Boone Trail residence, they asked the homeowner if a search could be done of the house and he agreed. Once inside, they found two men out in the open working with what turned out to be a homemade meth lab. Deputies also found trace amounts of marijuana and meth inside, along with small amounts being carried by the suspects. All five people inside were arrested and charged with manufacturing meth, maintaining a home for the sale of drugs, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. In addition, two small children were located inside the home and turned over to Social Services. 36-yr-old Earl Harding Benton, 48-yr-old Judy Gail Braddock, 30-yr-old David Louis Linton, 40-yr-old Anita Lafon Kinton and 32-yr-old Michael Edward Pennington were all charged and taken to the detention center.

Last week here on 3WC, we told you about three illegal immigrants that were discovered working at Fort Bragg. If security lets undocumented immigrants slip through into military bases, what’s to stop others from exploiting the same loopholes? 5th District Congresswoman Virginia Fox will be talking about the subject with Brian later today during Focus on the Foothills. They’ll also be discussing the energy bills recently put before the Congress along with the money spent for hurricane relief. That’s all coming up at 1:05pm, right after the midday stock report.

Hit & Run Totals Two On River Street

A wreck on River Street totaled two cars Tuesday afternoon. A Taylorsville woman was trying to turn onto River Street from a side road but didn’t notice the oncoming traffic. She hit a car driven by a Wilkesboro woman, then fled the scene of the crime. It didn’t take Wilkesboro police long to track her down however, as the suspect soon after wrecked her own car and was placed into custody. No one was injured in the incident, however estimated damages were placed at $3000. In addition, Julie Elder Carter was arrested and charged with hit & run driving. Also the 36-yr-old employee of the Wilkes Health Department was charged with DWI after failing a breathalyzer test.

Wilkes Open Forum Running This Week

Coming up tonight, Wilkes Open Forum will be up and running, presenting a film and also discussing treatment of the earth. The film “In Light Of Reverence” will be shown, starting at 6pm and then afterwards Judith Teele will be on hand to talk about protecting the natural resources of the planet. Once again that’s free to the public and will take place tonight at the Wilkes County Library, beginning at 6pm.

Local Man Falls Prey To ID Theft

A man from State Road called sheriff’s deputies after getting two very large credit card bills in his name. The accounts had apparently been opened sometime in the last two years, with over a thousand dollars charged collectively between the two cards. There is however a suspect in the case and the information was turned over to the sheriff’s department, who is continuing the investigation.

Hunting Safety Class Coming Up In October

This next bit of news is for all the would be hunters out there. Coming up next week, there will be a class on hunting safety at the Kerr Scott Ranger Station. The class will last three hours and 20 minutes each night with a test at the end. Once participants pass the test, they can receive their certification. There is no minimum age to attend, however you must be at all three classes in order to take the exam. To pre-register for the class, you can call 919-733-7191. Thieves Pay Visit To Roaring River Home

A Roaring River man called sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday after thieves paid a visit to his property. 16 boards of treated wood were stolen from the man’s yard and also two dogs, his Red Bone Hound and a black mixed breed dog. There are no suspects in the case however deputies are continuing the investigation.

3WC Healthwatch: Fishing For Brain Cells

Eating fish can be good for your brain, as we explain in today’s 3WC Healthwatch. Rush University in Chicago did a study recently that found eating fish at least once a week can slow down the stress that aging puts on your brain. The reason being fatty acids in the fish, called Omega-3 tissues, boost brain functioning and also cut down the risk of a stroke. In studies done, the rate of mental decline dropped by an estimated 13% in people who ate at least one meal of fish per week. As for those who went without fish, their mental process continued to deteriorate at the regular pace. Basically that one meal a week will be the equivalent of going back in time four years and regenerating your brain.

Car Damaged At Millers Creek Residence

How can someone do so much damage without making a sound? That’s what a Millers Creek man is wondering today, after coming outside to find that someone had smashed his car during the night. $800 worth of damage was done to the vehicle, where it appears someone had repeatedly smashed it using a blunt object. Despite all the noise such an event would cause, neither the homeowner nor any of his family could recall hearing or seeing anything during the night. That investigation is ongoing.

Republicans Call For Drop In Energy Taxes

State lawmakers called for some changes in North Carolina’s energy taxes on Wednesday, asking Gov. Easley to roll back certain sections of the law. Included in that cutback would be a lowering of the gas tax by 2.5 cents a gallon and a cap to prevent it increasing by another five cents in January. Also a proposal was put forth to eliminate consumer taxes on home heating fuels, which would cost state and local governments an estimated $100 million a year. So far Easley has refused, saying that even a temporary cutback would damage state run programs.

School Systems Look To Alternatives To Fuel Up

With fuel costs staying around the $3 range, schools in Gaston County are looking for alternative ways to fuel up. The school system has installed a bio-diesel fuel system in its’ buses, meaning that they can run off recycled vegetable oil. Aside from being safer for the environment, the oil can be collected from school cafeterias and local restaurants, saving Gaston County an estimated $150,000 each year.

Paddling Under Attack At Robeson County School

Parents are criticizing the Robeson County School System, after a teacher was allowed to paddle one of her seventh grade students. Local parents are calling for charges to be filed, while showing bruises that the paddle left on the child. The student at Rowland Middle School had been misbehaving when the teacher pulled him aside and paddled him. School officials say the teacher followed county policies, which allow paddling in certain circumstances.

More Jobs Coming To Forsyth County

Good news for people in Forsyth County, as more jobs are headed to the area. Hayward Pool Products announced on Wednesday that the company plans to add 75 new positions in its’ Clemmons plant over the next three years. Average weekly pay for the new positions will be $990 plus benefits. The added jobs were made possible thanks in part to a grant of $100,000 from Gov. Easley’s One North Carolina Fund.

Grant Allows Local Products To Go Global

The Department of Commerce is helping a Hickory business use the global market to its’ advantage. Instead of bringing products in, the company is sending its’ hosiery products overseas to new markets. A grant of $397,000 made the move possible by allowing the Hosiery Technology Center to develop new training and research abilities, along with new avenues of operating via the internet. The Hickory company will be sending products out to companies in Japan, Singapore and Eastern Europe over the next three years.

Special Forces Students To Train In NC

15 counties in North Carolina will be the site of a training exercise for students wanting to become Special Forces operatives. The two weeks of training start this Saturday and will continue until October 29^th in Alamance, Anson, Chatham, Davidson, Guilford, Hoke, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly and Union. To avoid any accidents, all students in the exercise will be wearing armbands, identifying themselves as special forces soldiers.

NC State Player Faces Deportation

When the college basketball season starts, one member of the NC State team may be watching the games from another country. Sophomore guard Gavin Grant was charged with being an illegal alien this week by the INS, after information was released proving that he had been smuggled into this country before his freshman year. Now depending on the outcome of a hearing on the subject, Grant could be deported before the end of the month. Regardless of what happens, Wolfpack officials said that Grant would have a spot with the team when this all gets sorted out.

Appalachian Picked To Come In Second

More preseason polls have been released in college basketball and it’s a case of good news/bad news for Appalachian State. The good news is that the Mountaineers are expected to contend in the Southern Conference and are considered one of the elite teams, returning players from last season’s 18-12 run. However they fell just short in the voting, finishing in a tie for second place with UNC Greensboro. Just ahead of the two were Chattanooga and Davidson, both tied for first place.

UNC Lands Another Basketball Commitment

The news was good for UNC’s basketball team, as the Tarheels announced yet another commitment for their 2006 squad. 6-9 Alex Stepheson, a high school center from California, agreed to play for Roy Williams. Stepheson averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds during 2004, while also getting rave reviews for his defensive skills. He’s currently ranked as the 58^th best player in the nation.

Football Prospect Commits To Duke

On the football field, things haven’t exactly gone well for Duke. However the news was better on Wednesday as 6-7 Robert Drum committed to play for the school. Drum, a 270 lb. offensive lineman, turned down offers from Georgia Tech and South Carolina to put on a Duke uniform, saying that it was a good fit and he looked forward to helping the program turn itself around.

Charlotte Bobcats Score

In the NBA, preseason basketball got underway this week and the Charlotte Bobcats fell just short. They lost to the Atlanta Hawks109-105, being led by Gerald Wallace’s 22 points. Rookie Raymond Felton added 20 for Charlotte, who was playing without Sean May or Emeka Okafor.

Carolina Hurricanes Score Blowout Win

In the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes improved to 2-2 on the season with a blowout 7-2 win over the Washington Capitals. Eric Staal recorded his fifth goal of the season while rookie goalie Cam Ward kept Washington out of the nets. Next up this Saturday, the Hurricanes will take on New Jersey.

Wilkes Pregnancy Care Center In Need Of Supplies

As we go through October, the Wilkes Pregnancy Care Center finds itself in need of supplies. Diapers and baby wipes are badly needed by the organization, along with willing volunteers. Coming up soon there will be a volunteer training program going on, the dates of which will be announced in the next few days. At their memorial gathering this past weekend, $1925 was raised to help support the group. Never Leave Money In Your Car

It’s not a good idea to leave money in an unlocked vehicle. A Wilkesboro woman learned that lesson this week , after thieves opened up her truck and walked away with $500. The money had been laying in the console of the truck with the doors unlocked. There was no damage done to the truck itself and nothing else stolen from inside. That investigation is ongoing.

Gun Stolen From Local Home

Thieves broke into a local man’s home this week, but only left with a .38 caliber pistol. Nothing else was taken from the home and there was no damage done to the property. The theft occurred as the man was preparing to move to another area. There are suspects in the case and that investigation continues.

Presentation Coming Up Today On Medicare

If you’re confused about the new Medicare Plan D program, you’re not alone. Many people throughout the country are confused as to how exactly the new plan works. Storage Building Raided In Millers Creek

Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a piece of property in Millers Creek earlier this week, after thieves broke into a storage building. The building belonged to a construction company that was doing work behind Millers Creek Baptist Church. Taken in the theft were several thousand dollars worth of tools, including several drills and a Milwaukee skill saw. Deputies are continuing the investigation.

Child Abuse Prevention Team To Hold Conference

Child abuse affects all of us in some way, in our churches, schools and even in the workplace. Guns Stolen From Ronda Home

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a break-in that happened in the Ronda community. Earlier this week, thieves pried open the front door of a local man’s home, later walking out with five different guns, totaling over a thousand dollars in value. Nothing else was damaged or touched throughout the home. That investigation continues.

Samaritan’s Kitchen In Need Of Help

When people can’t afford to buy food here in Wilkes County, they go to the Kitchen. Samaritan’s Kitchen has been in operation for just over six years, helping people put food on the table. Now however the Kitchen finds itself in major need of support, both with food donations and volunteer help. NC Courts May Suspend Civil Cases

Civil cases may not be heard in North Carolina courts, if the state’s chief justice has her way. Justice Beverly Lake Jr. has ordered prosecutors to catch up with criminal cases, of which there are 79,000 waiting to go to trial here in the state. She also said the court was underfunded by lawmakers, who cut just over $70 million from their budget this year. Last year’s budget stood at $383 million while this year it’s $310. Justice Lake said that the lack of funding leads to more delays in getting a case to trial, violating the defendant’s rights.

Bulletproof Vests Taken From Community College

Who would steal 20 bulletproof vests? That’s what officials in Brunswick County want to know. Thieves broke into a law enforcement classroom at Brunswick Community College this week and walked out with 20 of the vests. Over a thousand dollars worth of equipment was left behind in the classroom, as the thieves apparently were only interested in the vests.

I-40 Reopened In Davie County

Portions of I-40 in Davie County were reopened yesterday after a tractor trailer wrecked. Around 5am, the truck wrecked and spilled its’ cargo, shingles and other building supplies. Crews had to shut down the area for three hours as they cleaned up the mess. Thankfully however there were no injuries, although it’s unclear what caused the truck to wreck, as no other vehicles were involved.

Cheap Gas In Alamance

A mistake by a gas station in Alamance led to some cheap gas for several people. A news photographer was driving through the area when he found a local station selling gas for 29 cents a gallon. The sign was meant to read $2.95 a gallon, but employees had misspelled it on both the pumps and signs. The photographer went inside and told employees, who immediately corrected the mistake. However locals who drove by in the early morning before the photographer arrived were able to fill up for under 10 dollars.

Hooker Furniture Closing Doors

Bad news for people today in Pleasant Garden, as Hooker Furniture announced on Tuesday that the local plant will be shutting its’ doors effective immediately. Almost 170 workers were still there this week, helping to produce and load the plant’s final shipments. They had been informed of the decision several months ago and the company helped to hold job fairs and find other employment for the now out of work employees. Around 45 workers will still be employed til the end of the year, to help pack up supplies and clean up the plant.

Lawmakers Decide Not To Override Veto In Teacher Dispute

State lawmakers decided on Tuesday not to try and overturn Gov. Easley’s veto of the teacher licensing bill. The plan had been designed to bring more teachers into North Carolina, by lowering our requirements and standards. Easley refused to allow it however, saying that the state couldn’t progress and move forward with teachers who aren’t qualified to do their jobs. Democrats and Republicans alike met with the governor this week and have apparently reached a compromise, although nothing was official on Tuesday night. Lawmakers will meet later today to discuss the matter.

Coach K Leading Candidate For Olympics

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski might be getting a second job in the near future. He’s emerged as one of the front runners to be named the new coach for the U.S. 2008 Olympic men’s team. Despite the possible new job, Coach K isn’t leaving behind his former one. Earlier reports had the coach stepping away from Duke while preparing for the 2008 games, but school officials said that wasn’t the case. If Krzyzewski is picked, he’ll be the first college coach to take over the men’s team since 1988.

Duke Defenseman Possibly Out For Season

The news just keeps getting worse however for the Duke football team. Freshman Vince Oghobaase, is still recovering from knee surgery and may have to redshirt the rest of the season. A decision on shutting it down for the rest of the year will be made after this week. Oghobaase, one of the top 100 defensive ends in the nation coming out of high school, was expected to be a big part of the Duke defense, however after spring practice, he had to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, which he’s still trying to recover from.

Preseason Polls Start Coming Out

In college basketball, the preseason polls are starting to be released, beginning with the Atlantic Sun conference. A North Carolina team is number one in the new poll, as Gardner-Webb is expected to repeat as champion of the conference this season. The school in southern North Carolina received 20 out of the 30 first place votes and will retain their starters from last season’s 18-12 run.

East Carolina Searching For Baseball Coach

Around the college baseball scene, East Carolina is hunting for a new coach, as current team leader Randy Mazey has been suspended. The school didn’t explain why the three year coach had been suspended and not fired, but they did say a search for a replacement was in the works. Until then, assistant Billy Godwin will serve as the acting head coach of the program.

Panthers Make Some Roster Moves

Coming off their win over Arizona on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers did some shuffling with their roster this week. Adam Seward, who’s out for the year with an injured foot, was placed on injured reserve. Taking his place from the practice squad was fellow linebacker and second year player Sean Tufts. Also tight end Mike Seidman may have to miss a few more games, as he continues to heal from a shoulder injured against Miami. Seidman has been back at practice, but Coach Fox says he’s not ready to play in a game just yet.

NASCAR Standings

Heading into this weekend’s race at Charlotte, it’s Tony Stewart back atop the leaderboard, 75 points ahead of second place Ryan Newman. Greg Biffle is 88 points back in third place, with Rusty Wallace and Jimmie Johnson rounding out the top five. Carl Edwards is sixth, Mark Martin seventh, Matt Kenseth eighth, Jeremy Mayfield ninth and Kurt Busch is at the back of the Chase standings, coming up in tenth place.

More Counterfeit Money Pouring Into The Area

Wilkesboro police are investigating two separate cases of counterfeit money coming into the county. The incidents happened over the weekend, first at Wal-Mart and additionally at BB&T. At Wal-Mart, cashiers discovered two fake $10 bills when turning over the night’s receipts. The video tapes were turned over to police in hopes of locating the suspect. At the Wilkesboro BB&T branch, some money was returned from a local business after the store owner found that it was fake. Over $500 in fake bills were turned back over to the branch. Bank officials believe the fake money was brought in during a night deposit and are trying to identify the person responsible. Both of those investigations are ongoing.

Prison Inmate Attempts To Escape From Wilkes

Sheriff’s deputies had to track down an escaped inmate over the weekend. The man, 25-yr-old Randy Elijah Gilleland, was being taken to the detention center of the prison, when he suddenly took off running, attempting to get away. Deputies quickly tracked him down and placed him back under arrest. Now in addition to the other charges, he was charged with attempted escape.

Wilkes Open Forum Running This Week

Coming up this Thursday, Wilkes Open Forum will be back in action, presenting a film and also discussing treatment of the earth. The film “In Light Of Reverence” will be shown, starting at 6pm and then afterwards Judith Teele will be on hand to talk about protecting the natural resources of the planet. Once again that’s free to the public and will take place this Thursday at the Wilkes County Library, beginning at 6pm.

Vehicle Stolen From North Wilkesboro Home

Always lock up before you leave. A North Wilkesboro man found that out the hard way over the weekend, after returning to find his car had been stolen. The vehicle had been parked in the man’s garage, which had been left unlocked. As the man went inside to call and report the stolen vehicle, it whizzed by his house and he was able to identify the man driving it. After a short investigation, the man was arrested and the car returned to its’ owner. 29-yr-old Shawn Edward Nunn was charged with second degree burglary and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Gas Thieves Hit Another Wilkes Business

Gas thieves hit another business in Wilkes over the weekend, this time targeting Foster’s Grocery in Ronda. A man pulled up in a white van, pumped $69 worth of gas into the vehicle and then drove off down the road. A description of the van was turned over to sheriff’s deputies and that investigation is ongoing.

WCC Holds Program For Business Leaders

There can be a lot of headaches if you run your own business. What’s the requirement to qualify for overtime? What’s an appropriate amount of time to set aside for rest and meal breaks? Wreck On 421 Over The Weekend Totals Three

Always make sure your light is green before passing through. A man from Sneads Ferry learned that the hard way over the weekend, after causing a three car pileup. He was traveling down 421, but didn’t notice that his light was red. Instead he plowed straight on, hitting two vehicles being driven by men from Wilkesboro. Estimated damages were placed at $17,500. That first driver was taken by EMS to Wilkes Regional and an update on his injuries were not available at this time.

Spots Still Available At Head Start

For any parent who wants to get their child started early on their education, Head Start has some available spots left. There are currently two openings in the program for new students, after that the kids will be put on a waiting list. Classes started in August for this year’s program and will run until May of 2006. Students can enroll at any time up until March of 2006. After that they’ll have to wait until the next term. The classes run from 8:30am until 2:30pm Monday through Thursday. The students are admitted based on their family income, as those in the lesser income bracket get taken first. Gas Companies Dragged Into Court

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is putting his money where his mouth is this week, filing a lawsuit against McLeod Oil Company and Home Oil Incorporated. The two companies have been charged with fixing prices and forcing stations to raise the cost of gas artificially. The state attorney general’s office is demanding that each company pay a $5000 for each violation and be forced to give up all additional profits made from the illegal hike. In Durham, the price of gas shot up 40 cents on September 28^th at all the company stores except one. The A&P Mini Mart in Durham refused to go along with the increase, so company officials came in and padlocked the gas pumps. After the lawsuit was brought, officials apologized and removed the locks from the pumps.

Bird Flu Possibly Headed To North Carolina

Officials from the state’s poultry industry are meeting this week, to try and figure out how to protect the animals and people here in North Carolina from the deadly Asian bird flu. Already in Asia, 60 people have been killed by the virus, which was found over the weekend in portions of Europe. Disease specialists from across the state are suggesting that vaccines be handed out, especially to the workers in North Carolina’s 5000 poultry plants. A decision as to what to do hasn’t been made yet.

Big Merger For Insurance Companies

One of the biggest insurance companies in North Carolina announced plans for a merger on Monday, as Jefferson Pilot Corporation will be bought out by Lincoln National for $7.5 billion dollars. The move will create one of the largest insurance companies in the country. The board of directors will be split between seven members from Jefferson Pilot and eight from Lincoln. The deal will become official in the first quarter of 2006, after being ratified by both parties.

Woman Missing In Orange County

Officials in Orange County are asking for help today after the disappearance of a local woman. 34-yr-old Alishia Gayle Moore disappeared over the weekend in Durham and was last seen driving down the road in her 2000 black Dodge Neon. The vehicle has the license plate TRH-5472. Miss Moore is described as being 5’7 and weighing 110 lbs. with brown hair and brown eyes. The Orange County sheriff’s department is asking that you give them a call if you have any information at (919) 644-3050.

High County Needs More Qualified Workforce

Bad news coming out of Watauga, as the High County Workforce Development Board has released their report and believe they know the reason why new jobs aren’t coming to the mountain counties. The report comes after 15 months of research and preparation, as the board tried to determine why jobs are leaving. The major problem appeared to be a lack of skilled workers, according to the board’s report. People don’t have the ability needed in most new jobs, which usually deal with technology. As it stands, retail jobs are responsible for nearly 55% of the employment in the area and new demands are growing in construction and professional services. The board suggested that those either unhappy with their present job or out of work return to some type of college and get more education, so that they can apply for better paying jobs.

State’s First Turnpike Coming Up Soon

Within the next five years, North Carolina will join the list of states with a turnpike. The NC Turnpike Authority is planning to create possibly as many as nine toll roads across the state, to solve traffic congestion and also provide North Carolina with more income. The first one will be put up in Durham, stretching from the local freeway to Morrisville and current plans have that one set to open in 2010.

High School Football From Monday

Taking a look at the high school scores from Monday, it was West Wilkes beating South Stokes 28-0. The Blackhawks improve to 5-2 with the win, good enough for fifth place in the Northwest 1-A conference. Meanwhile the news wasn’t so good for Cardinal fans, as East Wilkes fell to Elkin 48-0. The loss drops East to 3-5 on the season.

Wake Forest Rusher Moves Up ACC Chart

In college football, the news wasn’t all bad for Wake Forest despite getting blown out this weekend by Florida State. Running back Chris Barclay had 125 yards on 21 carries, putting him at 3491 for his career. That’s good enough for 14^th all time in ACC history, just ahead of former Virginia Cavalier and current New York Giant Tiki Barber. If he gains 63 more yards this season, he’ll pass former NC State running back Tremayne Stephens for 13^th.

UNC Receivers Walking Wounded

Up the road in Chapel Hill, a member of the UNC Tarheels went under the knife this week. Wide receiver Jarwarski Pollock had to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the same procedure that former Tarheel basketball player Sean May recently underwent. Due to the fact damage was less severe to Pollack’s knee, team doctors expect him to be able to play October 22^nd when the Heels host Virginia.

France To Break Up Super Teams

Bigger than the result of Sunday’s race, a major announcement was handed down over the weekend by Brian France of NASCAR. He plans to break up all of the so called super teams in the sport. That means teams like Roush Racing, who have more than three drivers would see their garage get a little smaller. France said he decided to make the change because he feels that super teams prevent new owners from getting involved with the sport, a problem he wants to solve as plans go forth to add more racetracks in Canada and New York. The first stage of the plan will be put into motion next season, although he gave no indication as to what that might be.

Retirement Might Not Be Final For Wallace

In other NASCAR news, Rusty Wallace might not be calling it quits after this season. While still planning to retire, Wallace said that he might step into his car a few times, but not race a full schedule. One of the reasons is the fact his son Stephen will make his Busch Series debut in two weeks and if he gets a call up to the Nextel Cup Circuit next season, Rusty is thinking about having a father-son race, if his sponsors will let him.

Gas Stolen From Local Trucks

With gas prices hanging around the three dollar mark, it’s no surprise that some people refuse to pay. What is surprising is the lengths local people are going to avoid paying at the pump. Over the weekend, thieves drained the gas out of three cars in the North Wilkesboro area. No one in the area, including the car owners, could recall hearing or seeing anything during the night. However despite that and the fact no damage was done to the vehicles, over $75 worth of gas was drained from the cars. Deputies are continuing the investigation.

Public Lands Day Brings Out Crowd

A crowd gathered in support of Public Lands Day this weekend. On Saturday, slightly under 200 volunteers came out to W. Kerr Scott Reservoir to do cleanup work, including members of Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club and also the Boy Scouts. In addition, portions of the Overmountain Victory Trail and a new bridge that crosses Fish Dam Creek were dedicated in a ceremony at noon. The new bridge helps to link the Yadkin River Greenway with the Overmountain Trail, giving easier access to hikers and bike riders who want to travel the entire circuit.

One Car Totaled In Wreck On 421

One car was totaled in a wreck over the weekend on 421. A Durham man was driving down the highway when the cars in front of him all suddenly slammed on their brakes. He wasn’t able to stop his own car in time to cause a collision. The man’s vehicle was totaled, with estimated damage placed at $2000 and only minor damage done to the other car. Thankfully no one was injured in the crash.

Benefit For St. Jude Children’s Hospital Next Week

Coming up this Saturday you can have a good time and help a great cause. A benefit will be going on to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, beginning at 10am at the Bowman Branch Farm in North Wilkesboro. Came In To Do Some Shopping

A Wilkesboro woman fell victim to thieves late last week. She returned home to find the front door kicked in and several thousand dollars worth of material missing. Included in the theft were over 200 music CDs, $5 in change and a CD player, among other things. There are suspects in the case and the investigation continues.

Coats For Kids Still Going Strong

A lot of people have coats in the closet that never get worn. If you want to give those coats away, Our House has somewhere that’ll take them. The organization, in connection with Christmas in Wilkes, is running their annual Coats For Kids drive. Any and all coats are welcomed, new or used, child or adult size, whatever you have to give will be used and appreciated. Two locations here in the area are accepting the coats, Wilkesboro Cleaners and Hourglass Cleaners in North Wilkesboro. Donations can be dropped off any day between now and October 28^th. Car Stolen From Millers Creek Home

Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a Millers Creek residence after thieves drove off with the homeowner’s car. The woman had gone to bed with the keys, she believed, in her pocketbook and the vehicle sitting outside. The next morning she woke up to find the keys and the car both missing, however there was no sign of a break-in and nothing to explain how the keys were taken. The woman’s car had been reported throughout the night being driven through the Moravian Falls community with three men inside. There are suspects in the case and warrants are pending.

Thieves Wanting To Do Some Yardwork

A Wilkesboro man called sheriff’s deputies over the weekend after returning home to find his tools had been stolen. Thieves kicked in the man’s front door, causing over $700 worth of damage. In addition, they walked out of the house with a push mower and a weed eater. Nothing else was bothered and no other damage was done to the home. That investigation is still ongoing.

Appalachian Student Killed In Jonesville

A 19-yr-old college student was killed over the weekend after a wreck near Jonesville on I-77. The student, 19-yr-old Julie Nagel, had been going home to Maryland for fall break when her car was hit. She later died Saturday morning at Baptist Medical Center. Nagel was a member of the school’s field hockey team and the team cancelled their match this weekend, so other players could go be with the family.

SBI Investigating Winfall Mayor

Accusations of fraud have brought the SBI to one small North Carolina town. The mayor of Winfall, a town in Perguimans County is being investigated for receiving double payments for government expenses. Fred Yates was reimbursed by the state for town expenses, being given $572 to pay for his travel back and forth from Raleigh for meetings he had to attend. But now it turns out that Yates had already been paid by the town for those meetings, money that he never gave back. If the SBI finds enough evidence, criminal charges could be filed against the mayor.

Construction Can Lead To Delays On I-40

For anyone heading toward Raleigh on I-40 the next few days, you can expect to be a little slow in getting there. Over the weekend, officials noticed some flaws in the pavement, meaning that portions will have to be ripped out and replaced. That will go on over the next few weeks on I-40 at a ten mile stretch from US 15 to the Durham Freeway. In addition, two eastbound lanes near the NC Highway 55 interchange will also have repairs done.

State Of Emergency In Beaufort County

While most people were happy to have rain falling over the weekend, portions of the state find themselves still struggling to recover. In Beaufort County, the area is still in a state of emergency. EMS workers were called in, people had to be rescued from their homes by boat and shelters were opened to house the suddenly homeless citizens. Also in Wilmington, a new record was set for October with over eleven inches of rain since Friday.

Officials Still Sorting Out Major Pileup

A massive wreck Friday in Alamance County is still under investigation today. Over 70 cars were involved in the wreck on I-85, in what appears to be a chain reaction. DOT workers have determined that several cars slowed down on the road, to look at some cars stopped on the side. Then the domino effect happened, as drivers behind them couldn’t slow down and caused the pileup. Several people had to be taken to the hospital, but none of the injuries proved fatal. The section of highway wasn’t reopened until late Friday night.

Problem At High Point Plant Solved

A potential problem with a school bus plant in High Point was solved over the weekend, after an agreement was reached between the business and the union. This past June, the 1300 workers at the plant voted to join the United Auto Workers union and as such, wouldn’t work unless an agreement was in place. That issue was solved on Friday, as the union and Thomas Built Buses agreed in principle on a deal, which now goes to the union workers to be ratified. Thomas makes buses for most of the schools in North Carolina.

Friday Night Football

Taking a look around the high school scene, it was North Wilkes in our 3WC Game of the Week falling to Ashe County 42-7. Penalties and turnovers were the major problem for the Vikings, who fall to 17 with the loss, while Ashe County moves up to 5-2, taking sole possession of first place in the Mountain Valley Conference. Coming up later tonight, East Wilkes will be at home, playing host to Elkin in a game rescheduled from Friday. Also West Wilkes goes on the road, with a doubleheader. The JV team takes the field at South Stokes at 5pm, while the varsity will take over at 7:30pm. ‘

NCAA Scoreboard

Around the college football scene, it wasn’t a good weekend for ACC teams from North Carolina. Wake Forest got blown out by Florida State 41-24, dropping to 24 on the season. By the end of the third quarter, the Deacons had cut the lead down to three, but couldn’t generate a defensive stop and the Seminole offense exploded. Meanwhile, the news wasn’t any better for Tarheel fans, as UNC went on a painful trip to Louisville and ended up surrendering the most points in their 117 year history. UNC lost 69-14, falling to 2-3 on the season and ending a two game winning streak. The Duke Blue Devils however would just like to get on a winning streak, no matter how small. They fell against Miami 52-7 on Saturday, giving up three touchdowns in a five minute span. Freshman quarterback Zack Assack had a rough game, going 4 of 15 for eight yards passing and six yards rushing. The 1-5 Blue Devils had one bright spot, as running back Ronnie Drummer broke away for an 81-yard touchdown in the first half, the longest play given up by Miami in 29 years. In other scores, Appalachian State fell to Furman 34-31, dropping to 3-1 on the year, while East Carolina pulled off the 41-28 win over Rice, improving to 203 on the season.

Panthers Pull Out Win Over Cardinals

In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers overcame a slow start to beat Arizona 24-20. Jake Delhomme tossed for 243 yards and two touchdowns, while Steve Smith caught 8 passes for 119 yards. With the win, Carolina improves to 3-2 on the season and get set to go on the road against Detroit next weekend.

Martin Drives Away With NASCAR Win

On the Nextel Cup circuit, it was Mark Martin taking the checkered flag during Sunday’s Banquet 400. Greg Biffle was second, Carl Edwards third, points leader Tony Stewart came in fourth and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top five. Next up drivers head down to Charlotte for the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowes Speedway.

Hurricanes Fall To Islanders

Coming off a major win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Carolina Hurricanes fell back to Earth this weekend. They lost to the New York Islanders 3-2. The loss drops Carolina to 1-2 on the season.

Highway Patrol Close Down Road For Wreck

Thursday morning, portions of 421 near the Red White & Blue Road were shut down after a tanker truck overturned. According to the Highway Patrol, the driver lost control of his vehicle and ran off the road, flipping the truck. The tanker then separated from the rest of the truck, blocking off one section of 421. To clean it up, the Highway Patrol had to block off both sections of road near exit 276. The wreck was cleared off and everything was back to normal by 11am, while the driver sustained a few injuries but nothing serious.

License Check Leads To Drug Bust In Moravian Falls

Sheriff’s deputies were doing a license check Wednesday night in Moravian Falls when a vehicle pulled up smelling of marijuana. Inside there was an even stronger smell of the drug. Deputies asked the driver first to pull off the road, then if they could search the vehicle. She agreed and was then asked to step out of the car, along with both of the passengers. One of the passengers was carrying $5325 worth of cash in his pocket and even more money was found between the seats, totaling $6403 in addition to a small amount of marijuana. When asked about the money, one of the passengers told deputies they were headed to Winston Salem to buy drugs. Three of the passengers gave deputies fake names and after their fingerprints came back it was clear why. Between two of the men, there were seven warrants out for their arrest from Caldwell County. All four, 18-yr-old Amanda Linder, Justin Caldwell, Tantae Little and Harrold Wilfong were all charged with conspiracy to traffic marijuana, while Caldwell, Little and Wilfong were all charged in addition with resisting arrest for giving a fake name. More charges may be pending in the case, as deputies also found a stolen credit card in the vehicle, that had been taken during an armed robbery in Hickory.

Warning For Lead Foot Drivers This Weekend

As we enter into the first weekend of October, it’s time for food, family and football. But there are also a lot of lead footed drivers on the road, something the Highway Patrol wants to crack down on. Operation Slow Down 2005 started this week and will continue until Monday, with more troopers out on the road and cracking down on speed violations. Most major highways here in Wilkes and across the state are targets, due to the fact speeding tickets have jumped 147% over the last six years.

Wreck On River Street Wednesday Totals Two

Wilkesboro police were called out to the scene of a wreck on River Street Wednesday morning. A Wilkesboro woman had been driving on River Street when she turned around to check on her child in the back seat. When she looked back at the road, the car in front of her had stopped and she didn’t have time to avoid a collision. Estimated damages from the wreck were placed at $3500. Thankfully however no one was injured in the crash.

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Tomorrow

Alzheimers is a deadly disease, one that can rob a person of their mind. Coming up tomorrow there will be the annual Memory Walk at Wilkes Community College. You can stop by the college anytime from 8:30-11am and donate to help raise money for Alzheimer’s research, or you can also stop by some of the booths set up and get some more information about the disease itself and what you can do to help treat someone.

Always Know Where Your Keys Are

Never leave your keys inside the car. A Wilkesboro man found that out the hard way this week, after leaving the keys in the ignition and then going to bed. Next morning the man’s truck was gone from the driveway, however no one in the neighborhood could recall hearing or seeing anything during the night. Information about the truck was given over to sheriff’s deputies and that investigation is ongoing.

Blood Drive Coming Up Today

There’s nothing more important than giving the gift of life. Over the last few days, blood drives have been going on throughout Wilkes County, building up our own supply while also raising enough to send down to the Gulf Coast. There still is a need here in the area however and the Red Cross is hoping to fix that with a drive going on today at Britthaven. It will stretch from 10:30 this morning til 1:30 this afternoon, however it’s by appointment only, so to call and set up a time, you can contact the Red Cross at 838-4563.

Painkillers Stolen From McGrady Residence

Deputies were called out to a home in the McGrady community on Wednesday, after thieves broke into a local man’s home. The homeowner had just returned from the hospital, coming back to find his bedroom door had been broken and some pain medication was missing from inside. In addition, the thieves took $150 from the bedroom dresser. Deputies are continuing the investigation.

Pet Fair In Wilkes This Saturday

If you’re looking for a pet to take home, the Wilkes Animal Shelter wants to help you find one. Coming up tomorrow, they’ll have an adoption fair going on at the shelter from 10am until 2pm. That’s located at 408 Call Street in Wilkesboro, just below the new courthouse. In addition, the shelter has started a “Pet Look Alike” contest. From now until November 1^st, you can mail in pictures of you and your pet to the shelter and a winner will be announced on November 12^th. Included in the mailing you need your name, address, phone number and the name of your pet. You can mail that to the Wilkes Animal Shelter at 408 Call Street, Wilkesboro North Carolina 28697. Items Stolen From Under Wilkesboro Home

A Wilkesboro man got a surprise when he arrived home on Wednesday. Thieves had been by the house and decided to do a little shopping. Stolen from under his back porch was a Hitoshi laser saw along with an air compressor. No one in the area could recall seeing anyone near the home during the day. Deputies are continuing the investigation.

Celebrate National Public Lands Day This Weekend

Saturday is National Public Lands Day, a time dedicated to cleaning up the areas we live in. Here in Wilkes County, a clean up will be going on at the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, starting at 7am. Anyone who wants to take part can meet at Tail Race Park, just below the dam and officials will hand out work assignments. Later on at noon, free lunch will be given out to all volunteers.

Disaster Relief Benefit Tomorrow In Taylorsville

Coming up tomorrow, you can help a good cause and have fun at the same time. The Friendship Lutheran Church in Taylorsville is hosting a Hurricane Benefit BBQ and Cruise In. The event will have live music from the Millsaps Family, Fairgrove United Methodist Praise Team and the group Solid Edge. That’s tomorrow, October 8^th from 3-7pm at the Friendship Lutheran Church, located at 5300 Church Road in Taylorsville.

Steroid Policy Enforced At UNC Chapel Hill

UNC Chapel Hill became the first school in North Carolina to install the one strike and you’re out steroid policy. As of next Monday, any athlete caught using or testing positive for steroids at the school will be automatically kicked off their team, without a chance of being reinstated this year. Any athlete that tests positive for other substances, aside from steroids will be put on probation and enrolled in a drug counseling program. The change comes after a nine month study by the university of its’ drug policy.

Woman Facing Eviction For Holding Bible Study

In Chapel Hill, a woman is facing eviction today after holding a Bible Study in her home. Dorcas Saunders operates Sunshine Outreach Ministry from her home in Chapel Hill, holding three services a week inside. However she lives in a low income apartment subsidized by public funds and so the city has informed her that using her home for a church, as she calls it, violates her lease agreement. Their argument is that the apartment has been defaced by the ministry signs and using it for ministry violates her agreement that the house be used “solely for residential purposes”. Town leaders said they had no problem with a Bible study, but the group couldn’t call itself a church or they would have to find another place to go.

Massive Drug Supplier Dismantled In Wilmington

State officials announced on Thursday that they have destroyed a major drug distribution ring, operating out of Wilmington. Thanks to “Operation Maple Leaf”, which began in 2003, over 50 people have been arrested and will now face significant jail terms. Over a thousand pounds of marijuana and 110 pounds of cocaine had been smuggled in by the group, who mainly operated out of Maple Hill in Duplin County. The drugs were smuggled in by Honduran nationals in exchange for weapons and cash that were sent back to the Central American country.

Firefighters Told Not To Raise Money For Hurricane

The town of Cary North Carolina has come under attack today, after telling firefighters they couldn’t raise money to help the hurricane victims. Members of the Cary Fire Department wanted to use the local fire stations as dropoff points, to raise funds for the Gulf Coast. Town leaders tossed out the idea, saying that public facilities couldn’t be used to support a private cause.

Research Group Tries To Find Lost Colony

After almost 400 years, a research group on the Carolina coast believes they can find the Lost Colony. The First Colony Foundation has started digging on Roanoke Island, investigating what they are calling numerous magnetic anomalies buried at the north end of the island. The researchers say they believe remains from what used to be the settlement are buried, possibly under water. The excavation will be going on for the next several weeks.

New Additions Coming To Asheboro Zoo

Some new additions will be making their way to the Asheboro Zoo in the next few months. Thanks in part to recent donations, the zoo has built a major expansion of its’ elephant and rhino facilities, building on the grasslands exhibit and allowing the organization to bring in more animals. Construction is expected to begin within the next month and by next year the project could be complete.

North Wilkes is at home, looking for their second win of the season against Ashe County, while in our 3WC Game of the Week, it’ll be East Wilkes trying to do what no other team has been able to accomplish this year. Knock off the 6-0 Bucking Elks of Elkin. Kickoff of all those games are set for 7:30, and the McDonald’s pregame show will go on the air at 7:15. All this on your home for local sports, 3WC.

Wolfpack Hold On To Beat Georgia Tech

In ACC football action last night, it was NC State pulling out the win over Georgia Tech 17-14. State improves to 2-2 after the win while the Yellowjackets fall to 3-2. Brian Clark had four catches for 148 yards for the Wolfpack.

New Recruit For UNC

The UNC Tarheels got a boost for next year’s freshman class in basketball, as center Deon Thompson committed to the school. The 6-8 Thompson, who weighs in at 250 lbs., averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds during his junior season and has been compared to Erik Williams of Wake Forest. Thompson turned down an offer from Kentucky to play for the Heels.

NBA News & Notes

Taking a look at the senior circuit, coach Bernie Bickerstaff wants to change the pace a little for the Charlotte Bobcats second season. After bringing in Raymond Felton and Sean May, he’s also looking to adopt some of Roy Williams’ up tempo offense. Bickerstaff said now that he’s got three guards who can run the up tempo system, in Felton, Brevin Knight and Kevin Burleson, the team plans to take advantage. In other Bobcats news, Sean May continues to improve ahead of schedule, so much so that team doctors are now saying he could possibly be back with the team next week, before the preseason even begins.

News Not Good For Panthers

The news wasn’t so good in the NFL however, as the Carolina Panthers will possibly be missing several players when they make the trip to Arizona. Cornerback Chris Gamble injured his ankle on Monday and is listed as questionable. Also Rod Smart is still recovering from a groin injury and linebacker Adam Seward’s foot still hasn’t healed. In addition, runningback Stephen Davis, still recovering from last season’s knee surgery, is listed as probable, after some swelling and soreness in the knee this week.

Waltrip Wins Appeal

NASCAR officials tossed out one of the fines they issued this week, as Michael Waltrip won his appeal. Waltrip had been fined $10,000 and lost 25 points after an incident at New Hampshire two weeks ago with Robby Gordon. But a commission of NASCAR officials ruled that the tape didn’t show Waltrip doing anything offensive and withdrew the penalties. Drivers will head to Kansas Speedway this Sunday for the Banquet 400.
