Scam Averted by Bank Funds Hold

A banks funds hold policy saved one local man form being the victim of a scam. Joey Parsons tells sheriff deputies he received a check in the mail recently for nearly three thousand dollars. A letter with the check said that if Parsons would deposit it and get cash out, then Western Union the money to the check writer, he could keep 300-dollars for his efforts, and he'd become a member of a shopping club. The problem, as anyone who has heard of this scam before knows, is that the check is a fake, and has absolutely no value at all. When Parsons took the check to his bank, they placed a two-week hold on the money, meaning he couldn't get the cash to do the Western Union transfer. WIthin the two weeks, the check came back as a counterfeit. This scam usually targets elderly victims, because of the assumption they'll have enough available balance in their accounts to take out the cash and send the moneygram. By the time the bad check turns up, they're out the money. In this case, neither the bank nor Parsons lost a dime.
