A Classic Movie Script?
Monday, April 30, 2007 at 2:03PM
A car chase, a near-crash, someone nearly getting run over, and a fire at the end of it all -- oh, and wait, someone got pepper-sprayed, too! An incident this weekend nearly had the makings of a classic movie by the time it was all said and done. It started Friday evening at Uncle Kenny's Gas and Grill on Yellow Banks Road. Apparently several people were fighting, and before deputies could get there, one of them took off in a blue car.
As they pulled up, deputies saw the blue car speed away, and they chased it for several miles, at times reaching speeds of 75 to 80 miles an hour. At one point the driver slid around a corner, nearly hitting a pickup truck. Later, he sped through a yard, nearly hitting someone standing outside. Finally, he came to the end of the road -- literally, where he jumped out of the car and let it crash into a wood pile.
As the car caught fire and started the wood pile ablaze, Gregg Kerley ran off the other direction. Deputies chased him down, though, and were finally able to deposit him unceremoniously in the back seat of a patrol car.
The deputies called for Mountain View firefighters to put out the fire, and while they were doing that, Kerley started kicking the passenger door, hard enough to dislodge the window and nearly push it all the way. out. He kept on after being told several times by a deputy to stop, and earned himself a several-second shot of pepper spray for his efforts.
After being washed off, Kerley was taken to jail, where he refused a breath test. He was jailed on a 10-thousand dollar bond, on charges of DWI, Driving on a revoked license, felony fleeing from an officer, resisting arrest, and damage to county property. He will also face charges for borrowing the car without permission.
