Alarm May Have Foiled Burglary

Wilkesboro Police think a burglar alarm may have scared away someone trying to break in to a local store early yesterday. Officers responded to an alarm at Mike's Bait and Tackle on Highway 268 shortly after 5 a-m. Someone had tried several times to break out the glass in the front door. Two different sized rocks were found in front of the door, and there was evidence of three different attempts to break the glass. Officers say the only damge was to the door, though, and the intended thief never made it inside. The store does have a video system -- as of the time of the report being filed, officers hadn't been able to view the tape to see if it showed anything. The case remains under investigation.
