Concerns About Bus Routes? Contact School Transportation Officials Today

Wilkes county schools officials twice this weekend distributed a phone message to parents letting them know how to to air their concerns over school bus safety. The increased concern comes in the wake of routes changes before school opened last week in Wilkes and other counties because of increasing diesel fuel prices and a resulting shortfall in state transportation funding for public schools. In a news release Friday, district officials said, “We’ve had several dozen calls since school opened regarding bus routes. Many issues have been resolved, but some people are still unhappy.” Superintendent Steve Laws said the Wilkes school system will take a second look at the routes to make sure all of them are as safe as possible. “We’re not going to subject our young people to unsafe pick-ups,” he said. The message sent out to parents encourages them to either call or e-mail school officials regarding school-bus safety issues today, even if parents have already done it previously. The communications should include the child's name(s), the parents’ telephone numbers, and the proper 9-1-1 street addresses.

The phone number to call is 667-1126. The e-mail addresses to use are:
• trippletts@wilkes.k12.nc.us
• barlowt@wilkes.k12.nc.us
• jenningsr@wilkes.k12.nc.us

The message also encourages parents to restrict calls to one per family. “We will compile all of your concerns and will personally go to each location,” a text version of the message says.
