Former WCC Student's Words for Current Students

John Miller, a 2012 WCC graduate, says Wilkes Community College is the reason he survived the recession and discovered success in the engineering industry. Speaking to a group of first-year architectural technology, building construction and applied engineering students during a visit on Friday, October 18, Miller says that he started WCC’s architectural technology Program in 2010 at a low point in his life. He now lives in Akron, Ohio, and works as a BIM (Building Information Modeling) manager for a 40-employee regional consulting engineering firm, Scheeser Buckley Mayfield. Another word of advice from Miller was for all students to become engaged in English courses because professional writing is very much a part of his role and takes the form of complex emails, reports and collaborative communications with his colleagues. Finally, Miller advised that well-developed problem-solving and critical-thinking skills will enhance one’s success in the workplace. Wilkes Community College, a member of the North Carolina Community College System, is a public, two-year, open-door institution serving the people of Wilkes, Ashe and Alleghany counties.
