Two Fatalities in Surry County Tuesday Due to Weather

The Highway Patrol responded to two separate weather related traffic fatalities in Surry County.

At approximately 1:24 p.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2014, the Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle collision on Poplar Springs Road near Elkin, NC. The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver, identified as Angela C. Blackburn, 44 of Elkin, was traveling south on Poplar Spring Road when she lost control on a snow/ice covered roadway. The vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, traveled onto the shoulder, down an embankment where it struck a tree, killing the front right seat passenger. The passenger has been identified as Jean S. Conley, 68, of Elkin. Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and weather was the contributing factor for the collision. Alcohol was not a factor. Charges are pending in this case.

At approximately 1:16 p.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2014, the Highway Patrol responded to a two vehicle collision on NC104, 2 miles north of Mounty Airy. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Dodge minivan, driven by Jamie C. Sutton, 37, of Meadows of Dan, Virginia was traveling on NC104. The vehicle lost control in a curve and crossed the center line, striking a 1991Toyota pick-up truck, driven by Robert J. Woodson, 32, of Mount Airy. As a result of the collision, the front right passenger of the Dodge minivan, identified as Joyce M. McDaniel, 37, of Meadows Dan, Virginia, was killed. Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that weather was the contributing factor for the collision. Alcohol was not a factor. Charges are pending in this case.
