Wreck Kills Hays Woman, Seriously Injures Husband

A Wilkes woman is dead and her husband is hospitalized in Winston-Salem following an accident sometime overnight on Shumate Mountain Road. Rescuers were called to where the vehicle had run off the road and hit a tree about 6:15 this morning, but Trooper Joe Rankin tells me he believes the wreck happened some time earlier, perhaps in the late evening or very early morning hours. It was near where Shumate Mountain Road and Dehart Church Road intersect. A passer-by had found Jimmy Wayne Teague of Hays still alive and had taken him by car to Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Rescuers found his wife, 37-year old Barbara Ann Teague, outside the vehicle, but pinned in some fashion by it. She was dead upon their arrival. Mr. Teague was transferred to Baptist Medical Center by ambulance not long after he arrived at Wilkes Regional, with injuries believed at the time to be critical. Hospital officials say he is in serious condition now. The investigation of the wreck, and even determining who was driving the vehicle, is still in progress.
