Drug Investigation and Car Chase

An ongoing undercover drug investigation ended with a car chase near Elkin.  According to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Department, an ongoing drug investigation of cocaine trafficking in the area led to a supplier in Elkin.  Marty Keith Mathis of 199 Decatur Avenue in Elkin was observed by undercover officers in a drug buy early Saturday morning.  Two unmarked Sheriff’s cars attempted to stop Mathis who took off and led officers in a car chase at speeds up to 90 mph from Carter Mill Road to CB Eller Road, Preacher Field Road, and finally to Martinburg Road where Mathis wrecked his car in a corn field.  Mathis ran from his wrecked car and was pursued by officers.  While on foot, Mathis threw a bag which officers retrieved.  The bag contained 8 grams of crack cocaine, 8 grams of Oxycodone, Zanax, and scales.  When undercover officers caught up with Mathis, he tried to fight with them.  One officer was kicked and another officer was bitten.  The officer who received the bite was treated and released from WRMC.  In addition to the drugs, nearly 2000 dollars in cash was found in Mathis’ pocket.  Mathis was arrested and charged with 2 counts of trafficking opium, 2 counts of possession to sell and deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and conspiracy to sell cocaine.  He was also charged with 2 counts of assault on a government official, resisting arrest, fleeing to elude arrest, and multiple traffic violations.  Mathis is in the Wilkes County Jail under a 60,000 dollar bond.
