Wilkesboro Sinkhole Update

Local officials continue to monitor the sinkholes. Town of Wilkesboro crews have been inspecting the Taco Bell-area sinkhole site along Hwy 421 in Wilkesboro for further cave-ins due to recent heavy rain.  Town Manager Ken Noland said that town officials are concerned that the sinkholes could get worse and/or new ones could appear.  Wilkesboro Town Officials plan to meet with North Wilkesboro-based Blue Ridge Engineering officials over the next several weeks to review initial engineering plans drawn up to abate the sinkhole issue. Last month, an evaluation led to estimated repairs.   It was determined that replacing collapsed culverts with new concrete culverts will take about a year to complete and could cost $1 million to $1.5 million.
